AF To Start NCE-TLV

Mon Jan 23, 2012 11:06 pm

According to ynetnews.com and the Air France website in Israel, AF will fly three times a week between NCE and TLV, starting on April 4, 2012. AF will operate either an A319 on an A320 on this route.

I wonder if Marseille would make more sense, since the city has the second largest Jewish population in France (80,000).

LY already flies to Marseilles. Nice seems to cater to a different market.

Just for info that is not very new .

LY flew NCE from 1968 untill 1971 when they switched NCE for MRS

AF flew 707s NYC LIS NCE TLV 3 x a week in summer of 1968 and 1969

And after 707 PAR NCE TLV

CDG NCE TLV by AB4 ( from 1976 )

Then as far as i can remember LYS NCE TLV 727 advanced by 1981

After 1991 most of the middle east flights were concentrated at CDGike it is now

But the Jewish community is still strongin Nice . Therefore AF moved a little bit too late to reopen this sector

Was the same flight number used all the way? It's very rare that bilaterals permit 6th freedom services via an airline's home country to use a single flight number between two 3rd countries.

Local Jewish communities have little to do with European routes to and from TLV. Otherwise you wouldn't have regular non-hub links to cities like BCN, BSL, CGN, CPH, BER, GVA, BUD, VIE, MXP, BRU, and other cities with no significant Jewish population.

The reason seems pretty straightforward to me. Israelis travel a lot to Europe on vacation, and Tel Aviv (recently named "best gay city in the world 2011") has become a popular holiday destination from Europe. There is more to O/D than ethnic affiliation.
