Did TWA Ever Operate A Boeing 727-100 Cargo Plane?

Tue Jan 24, 2012 1:33 am

I was browsing through some TWA timetables from the late 1960s looking at their
Air Cargo flights and found numerous Boeing 707 freighters and some Boeing 727s
listed too. How many Boeing 727-31QCs did TWA have and I am sure they were interchangeable
between being in passenger and all air cargo configuration.

They took delivery of 8 in 1967-68.

I don't know exactly how interchangeable they were - as in I do not know what kind of palletized seats they had, or even if that was how they managed the interiors - but they definitely operated at least eight 727-100 QC's.

The registrations of the first batch were N890TW through N895TW, delivered between March 23, 1967 and Sept. 14, 1967.

The second batch appear to have been leased from bankers' trust as they were built with the customer code "80" instead of "31." N9515T was delivered on Feb. Feb. 19, 1968 while N9516T was delivered on July 23rd of that year.

I remember 8 727-100s that were parked on the North side of the MCI maintenance base for several years (looked to be junked).
Could those have been the aircraft you mention?

No, couldn't have been those aircraft which all went to UPS and were converted to Rolls-Royce Tay engines. I think UPS only retired them around 2003/04.

The first of those aircraft below soon after delivery in 1967 and with UPS 35 years later in 2002. Note the larger #2 engine intake required with the R-R Tay conversion.

Any idea about those 727s at MCI?
They sat there for 10-15 years.

I found 9 TWA 727-31s shown as being retired between 1990 and 1993 and stored at MCI and broken up 8 to 10 years later. One (N839TW) only says it was withdrawn from use at MCI but doesn't mention being broken up so perhaps something else happened to it, so your recollection that there were 8 could be correct.

Registrations of those 9 aircraft (all delivered 1964-65):

N831TW
N839TW
N844TW
N848TW
N851TW
N854TW
N855TW
N856TW
N857TW
