Is This The Cleanest 727-100 Flying Today?

Tue Jan 24, 2012 7:03 am

Came across a video clip of an Boeing 727-100 with winglets and upgraded engines. Is this one of the last Boeing 727-100 flying? Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks for posting the video. Long live the three holer.

There are quite a few VIP, cargo and military 727-100s still flying, at a quick search on airlinerlist.com I found almost 50: N606DH, S9-SVE, N25AZ, HK-4154, D2-FCK, FAM 3503, XC-FAD/FAM 3501, 9Q-CDC, N30MP, HZ-MBA, HK-4407, N724CL, HK-727, 9Q-CGB, N231FL, M-FAHD, VP-BAP, N727AH, RP-C8017, N727VJ, 9T-TCL, S9-TAO, J2-KBA, D2-EVG, D2-EVD, D2-ESU, HK-1271, HK-1273, P4-JLD, FAE-691, 9T-TCK, S9-CAA, N401Z, 5X-PST, FAC1203, HK-4386, D2-FSA, N800AK, VP-BDJ, PK-YGZ, YV2309, N908JE, VH-TBS, VP-BDZ, VP-CJN, 9Q-CDJ, N311AG and N727XL. No doubt some of those don't fly regularly and some are stored by now (any confirmation and reports of that welcome) but I am sure more then half of these are operational.

VP-BPZ is also still flying. I once had a tour of this aircraft many years ago when it was N529AC based in GRR.

There was a freighter Contract Air Cargo 727-100 regularly flying into SDF for at least a week providing extra contract lift during the Christmas rush (it operated SDF-YWG-SDF pretty much the whole time). Not sure of that particular airplane's reg # but I bet that may be the last flying 727-100 in commercial service. Loved seeing and hearing that plane, even though I only got to see it at night.

No question their definitely out there! Most of our major US legacy carriers have their older 727 fleets still flying with both the -100/-200 variant's such as UA, AA, TW, DL and US to name a few. Unless Boeing and the FED put the screws down, we'll see them for a while longer!

There is one VIP 727 specifically that has around 6000 hours and is STC'd with RR Tay engines in all three holes. Instead of the normal 1600 gph with the JT8's it's burning around 950 gph. Amazing and they said that the 727 couldn't be a "more efficient" aircraft...lol

Aerosur (Bolivia) still operates a former UA and a AA B722A. Although both have very high cycles, I'd love to see these return to the US when their finished using them!

Slightly off topic but it seems Peter Nygård has a very keen eye for the ladies - clothing and an excellent plane. Sir, congratulations for keeping this bird in the air.

On a more serious note, I'd like to see more 727-100's flying around- I believe Trump's old plane was one; I saw it around once in a while.... Nice plane.

I didn't realize that aircraft was CP Air's first 727. I flew on it soon after it was delivered in March 1970. Nice to see it still flying almost 42 years later.

When first delivered it had 22 F and 75 Y seats. The 22 F suited the 727-100 with its unusual mid-cabin galley as the galley served as the cabin divider, but 22 F seats was far too many for the market. After a year or so in service the CP 721s were reconfigured to 12 F and 90 Y with a small Y cabin in front of the galley. UA did something similar on their 721s after their first few years of service. I think theirs had 24 F originally and 12 F when retired.

Does that mean that all the UPS B727-100QF's are now reduced to tin cans? I know they had a few in storage in Roswell (I believe) but as they were all Stage 3/4 birds I thought there was some use for them... How sad if they all disappeared.
Will just have to dig in my pocket and go get myself one before they are all gone

None of the UPS 721QFs are flying. I think most of the have been broken up. The only 727 currently flying wit the RR Tay conversion is N800AK. It is has been for sale for years without much interest. Unfortunately it is the odd duck of the 727 world and nobody wants it.

I really don't understand why there are not more pics. of this beauty.

I got involved with the QF program late in it's maturity. Actually with the problems that were happening with the flameouts. I know several folks who were key in this program and it was a hell of an undertaking for a "MRO". Alot of manhours were put into the re-engine and modernization of this little beauty. Such pride was taken watching these beauties fly. I still work with alot of the men who put this product into the air. We now work together at WN.

Search for Dee Howard, you will see a man and a company that is quite interesting. He did alot after being a WWII mech..

Perhaps they fly one into MIA from the Caribbean or SA but it definitely is not a -100. Even if it was a -100, according the FAA registry there are only about 7 still registered in the states with N231FL being the only cargo version.

Slightly off topic but it seems Peter Nygård has a very keen eye for the ladies -

that is an understatement

If I recall, this 727 has a brass pole and lots of mirrors inside...

Yes, had a look round it when it was in BZE a few months ago.....pretty garish if you ask me. And having titles like that on your plane tells you that he has an ego to match (a la Trump)
When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No-one has ever collided with the sky.

The center engine wasn't changed as part of the Super 27 conversion program.

Not the case when it came to the RR Tay STC MOD. All three were changed, correct?

Correct. That's why the center engine intake on the 721s with the Tay conversion is larger than the original oval intake of the 721 (which became round on the 722).

Was that also modified to allow more "air flow" to prevent the flame-outs that continue to haunt those conversions?

I believe all the Tay conversions are now retired. Assume the change to the #2 inlet was to improve airflow. I believe the change from the oval inlet on the 727-100 to the round inlet on the 727-200 was intended to reduce the number of compressor stalls which I've read were fairly common on 727s, especially the -100s with the oval inlet.

The JT8D fan diameter is 39.9 inches whereas the Tay's diameter is 44 inches. That has a lot to do with the larger number two inlet.
