Boeing Q4 2011 Results & Delivery Guidance

Wed Jan 25, 2012 1:48 pm

The official conference call will not be for another 90 minutes, but Boeing's 2011 Q4 results are out and they are as follows (reported by Reuters):

Net profit: USD 1.4 billion / USD 1.84 a share compared to USD 1.2 billion / USD 1.56 per share a year earlier.

Revenue: USD 19.6 billion compared to USD 16.8 billion a year prior.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group revenue rose 31% to USD 10.7 billion. ISD's revenue rose 4% to USD 8.5 billion.

The company gave guidance that it expected to earn between USD 4.05 and USD 4.25 per share in 2012 on revenue of USD 78 billion to USD 80 billion.

For what it's worth, 2012 delivery guidance is for 35-45 787-8s and 35-45 747-8's.

35-45 747-8's is that possible? The 787 I hope will achieve the high end at 45, we need more out there.

I believe the line is closing on two airframes per month, so that would be around 20-24. And there are a number of frames completed in 2011 that are being prepared for delivery in 2012.

Some more data:

Commercial Airplanes Group profits were up 56 percent.

Total BCA delivery guidance is between 585 and 600 airframes, with revenue expected to grow 31% in 2012.

While Boeing beat Wall Street estimates, shares fell $1.94, or 2.6 percent, to $73.42 in morning trading.

Woaw, that's about 30% or 40% of the current backlog, isn't it? This would enable them to offer new short-term production slots (in opposite to another certain VLA)

Boeing has 97 unfilled orders, so it would be around 1/3rd of the current backlog.

A commentator on the call noted that the 747-8 sales pipeline is promising for 2012 so I wonder where the book to bill ratio will be at the end of the year.

Also, it was interesting to hear that 2/3's of the 2012 deliveries for the 787 will be birds coming out of change incorporation. Boeing indicated this will include the delivery of any plane with a line number up to the mid-60s. Birds produced after this will not need post-FAL modification (i.e. delivery straight to customer after std. prep. work). I certainly hope the pace of change incorporation accelerates. Seemingly, less and less work will be required as early builds are delivered and taken off the list. It will be a glorious day when post-FAL change incorporation on such a large scale is no longer needed.

The number for 787 delivery changes AGAIN and this time is lower than at any other time I think?

What a sad start to an aircraft that promises so much. What was to be the jewel in the crown in Boeing's commercial portfolio is quickly becoming the runt of the litter. There'll be no cash in it for ages. Luckily B can hide the sickly 787 behind analyst beating numbers. In fact the very same analysts who were claiming that 2012 would be the year for the 787 delivery.

It's not a story anymore, it's just sad. Very sad

It's not the plane, it's the firm.

If they can't pull themselves together and square off with reality, their days are numbered. Simple.
