WN & FL Cuts In Florida?

Sun Jan 29, 2012 5:05 am

I know that WN is not going to take the MIA space that FL held. Are they going to be canceling others like EYW? I ask that because I recently flew on US outta EYW. A DL 737 and a pair of FL 737's were parked there too. Could WN be taking over the EYW route? Also talking of EYW, is that going to be like a slingshot on a 737 departure? It was high and fast on our CR9 sub for the CR7. We were weight restricted and only had about 70% of the plane full. The counter folks were buying people off.

EYW is one of the 22 stations WN is keeping. I was in the press release that was released not too long ago.
The opinions I post are of mine and mine alone, not of the airline I work for.

In addition to MIA, SRQ is closing as well.

FL accounted for 26% of SRQ's traffic, and provided the only nonstops to BWI, IND, MDW, and MKE. SRQ is in talks with B6, NK, and UA (among others) for replacement service.

I think WN has big plans for Florida. With a large hub in MCO, substantial presence in TPA and FLL, and service to ECP, JAX, PBI and RSW they have the market covered; for now. Once they start more international routes FLL and TPA will grow substantially. Also, FLL is pretty congested and limited for growth for about another year or so. So to answer your question, as for right now there will be less WN presence in Florida. Although in 1-2 years it should grow,

I believe WN will create Intra-Florida System like they do with Texas and California. I have a friend who tells me she attend a monthly meeting in Tampa, with people flying in from JAX and FLL on WN (They fly in first flight out to Tampa and 6:00ish flight back). If WN is keeping Panama City, Tallahassee, and Pensacola -- WN will uses these cities to connect every Florida cities where business people (as well as lobbyist and legislators) can do day business (or overnight).

I was disappointed WN decided not to keep MIA -- I thought WN could use MIA as part of Intra-Florida system. Maybe the cost of using MIA is expensive due to airport high debt with AA's renovation.

I thought WN just announced they will stop flying TPA-JAX? Am I wrong?

If they are dropping it then that's not the way to build up intra Florida flying.

This is correct, WN is cutting TPA-JAX.

Hope they have alternate travel plans!

Intra-Florida flights have seen a slow decline over the years, and the de facto intra-Florida carrier looks to be placing eggs in other baskets not in Florida (Silver Airways, previously Gulfstream).

WN (FL) doesnt serve Tallahassee. I could see PNS maybe getting some flights to MCO, FLL and TPA since its so far west and at least an 8 hour drive to central Florida from there.

If they are cutting TPA-JAX there is a slim chance to none that PNS or TLH gets launched. Don't forget silver airways (gulfstream) can't fill the 1900s.

PNS is getting kept by SWA per the press release. TLH isnt even in the AirTran system so SWA is definitely not going there.. What i was saying is I could see PNS getting a SWA flight or two to central and southern Florida because of the distance of PNS compared to the rest of the state. ECP currently gets MCO flights. Historically PNS has seen flights to MCO and TPA on commuter flights, and at one time DL served PNS to TPA, MCO and FLL on rj's.

As mentioned, we do not have WN here in TLH -- catchment area is too small, plus other cities (such as JAX or ECP) can be driven to-- and keep an eye on ECP (new Panama City) as the subsidies will end soon -- and WN will be free to pull out if they so choose.

I personally think that St Joe Corp who aided in developing ECP and enticing WN with lots of $$$$ are, in hindsight, ahead of themselves economy wise ...
I love to fly, and it shows!

Understood. I wasn't talking about them flying to the cities, I was talking about flights from there to TPA are probably not going to happen.
