Not sure I understand the rules. It says they must be from the Nordic countries then later states that they must be Norwegians. Which one is it?

If it is this you are referring to:

* They have excelled and inspired, and that they - as Norwegian - were challengers in own time.

Then they are talking about Norwegian, the airline, as being challengers in their time i.e. now.

If they mean Norwegian the airline and the people just need to be from the Nordic countries, then I'm surprised that Niels Bohr isn't on there.

How about Dag Hammarskjold?

A couple Scandinavian emigrants:

Knute Rockne!
(born in Norway, moved to Chicago when he was 5)

Victor Borge was not serious (though a serious musician), but internationally loved. A good representative.

And some Polar explorers:
Otto Sverdrup
Knud Rasmussen
Roald Amundsen

Roald Amundsen

I'm pretty sure that Roald Amundsen is there already. At least they had an article of him in this month's Norwegian inflight magazine. Just checked the photo database and yep, he's there already:

I'd guess Jean Sibelius, Alvar Aalto, Frans Emil Sillanpää, Eliel Saarinen and Eero Saarinen could be the Finnish names that we will see in the future...

But they have H.C. Andersen, Peter Wessel/Tordenskjold is displayed as a danish sea hero, Karen Blixen, Jørn Utzon and Tycho Brahe they just need more names.

They probably fired the people who made up the names for their new aircraft and decided to save money by asking everyone else

Wouldn't Norwegian think about changing its name, too? I mean, they've pretty much become pan-Scandinavian by now. I undestand that they cannot call themselves "Scandinavian", but something other than just the name of one country?

Norse? Nordic is available now, isn't it? Fennoscandia? (doesn't help Denmark, however). How about "Subpolar"?

Of course, compass direction southwest hasn't limited Southwest. (Nor did Northwest when it existed, and Delta certainly outgrew the Mississippi Delta.) Alaska isn't even based in Alaska, has more flights to/from California, and more spokes to Mexico than to Alaska.

Norwegian is the name of the people and language of Norway ....

Anyway, I think it's best that the Norwegian name is kept. It is where the airline started and where it has it's main office. Norwegian will open bases in other countries than the nordic ones too, but we cant call it northernasianamericanmiddleasterneuropean airlines because of that ....

The first Finnish face for DY tail will be poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, according to the news from Nordic Travel Fair in January. Probably the most widely known Finnish artist is Tom of Finland, his name gets 3,6 million Google hits... that would be cool

Though it should be her wife, who gets her face on the tail - just for inventing those pastries.

Also Edelfelt, Gallen-Kallela, Schjerfbeck, Tove Jansson, AIV or Arvo Ylppö could be on the list at some point...

How many airlines have expanded beyond their original geographical base and kept their original name (i.e., WN, DL, AS)

Keep the name!

Just by luck I found an IKEA ad at the bottom of the thread. Hence, I'd propose Ingvar Kamprad. Although maybe he has to die first.
