Did UA Increase E+ To 6 Inches?

Tue Jan 31, 2012 6:33 am

An article being picked up on the AP states all United international 757's now have E+ at 6" more space than regular economy. Isnt that 1 more inch than advertised? The same article states that United now had the most "premium economy" seats than any other airline and that once the remaining 767-400's are refitted this year and they finish the remaining 18 777's in 3 class configuration that United can claim the worlds most true lie flat seats. Does this match up with those who follow this closely?

I don't think all PMCO aircraft will be fitted with an extra 6 inches of E+, but the 752 had 6 rows on the left side of the aircraft that have now been reduced to 5 rows. The stated pitch is 31, so 31/5 gives you 6 inches to be added to the 5 new E+ rows. that would be 36+ inches. The 738s will divide up 31 inches onto 5 row while the 739 will have an extra row to divide the 31 inches, maybe 35/36 inches on the 739. Of course this all can be different by aircraft type do to actual pitch in front of the exits and whether the bulkhead rows already have E+ legroom.
My guess is you'll find PMCO aircraft with 35-36 inches just like UA has on differing aircraft in its fleet. Maybe an even occasional 34 inch pitch like SeatGuru shows on UA 744s on some of the E+ seating on the 772/736 international birds.

There are very few things I can think of in life where ONE INCH makes a real difference but economy is one. 5 inches was great, 6 would be better!

Let's put things into another perspective.

PMUA recently changed seats on the 777 fleet to new slim-line seats. Same pitch between rows of seats, but there's actually an extra inch or two of leg room because of the slim-line seats.

IIRC, the PMCO seats are of a slim-er design than the PMUA seats. So, the pitch between the PMUA and PMCO birds (ie the 752's) may be the same, but the PMCO birds will have more space available in between rows due to the slim-er seats.

I can report that the 37" pitch on the CO 757 E+ is very generous and a tremendous improvement over the previous product. Note that s-CO has 37" pitch in F on the 737-500!
