IAH Gets Flights To HAV

Tue Jan 31, 2012 2:59 pm

Just found this article in my morning Biz Journal email:

Looks like charter flights will begin from Houston to Cuba on a "Miami-based 737". Does anyone know anything else about this? What airline? How often? etc.

Thanks for the info.

Boilerplate sorry if this has been posted.

My guess is it being operated by a Miami Air 737 and the reporter just got that part wrong.

Also to note, though IAH may be approved to handle Cuban charters, it's currently just a single round trip scheduled for 2/2-2/5.

"After leaving on Feb. 2, it will return with its passengers on Feb. 5.

The Houston Airport System also said it hopes Houston airports will became a 'gateway' to Cuba in the future, although there are no other trips planned to the country in the near future."

The basic problem is not the flights, it´s the restriction for US citizens to visit Cuba... all the flights for Miami are for Cuban Americans that can travel much more freely to the Island.

The day the situation is solve you will see thousand of flight to Cuba, Havana, Varadero, Cayo Largo, Cayo Coco.... many of this aiports are ready to get a good load of traffic...

Miami and Atlanta will be a huge getaways for Cuba, but the traffic will be big so I expect to see something similar to Cancun, getting flights for all over the USA....

I remember time ago we discuss about I think it was Continental trying to fly from Los Angeles to Havana as well... I don´t know if that flight ever took off....

At HOU there is an exhibit of old airline paper memorabilia and one of the objects displayed is a Chicago and Southern Airways timetable which shows that at one time HOU-HAV nonstop flights were part of a scheduled service. This must have been in the early 1950s although I don't remember the exact dates.
