OAG Changes 2/3/2012: AA/CO/DL/NK/UA/WN

Tue Jan 31, 2012 7:06 pm

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one

direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5

days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the

future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no

previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

WN's finally loaded their Fall schedule. So, because there is no previously loaded schedule to compare to, I compare to the prior year. I have also combined all FL and WN operations under the WN code to make this more relevant. So, FL flights appear as WN both in 2012 and in 2011 for a better comparison.

A shift to UA (probably AX/G7) that hasn't yet been loaded on the UA side, no doubt. A shift of G7 capacity to CLE could explain some of the CLE "cuts," which could be going to UA/G7 but not yet loaded.

Even EWR-STL and ORD-STL are being trimmed... I guess the local economy is struggling for this to happen. But still surprising that UA/CO uses mostly regional to STL (except to SFO), yet DL/AA can at least maintain some level of mainline service to their large hubs.

It's important not to read too much in to UA's schedules at STL, which relate as much or more to the needs for STL-based regional equipment at various hubs than to the performance of the flights or the station.

Yeah, it sure looks like Spirit overestimated their abilities out of Vegas! It'll be very interesting to see if they continue to try to develop a "hub" in Nevada or not. They've got a lot of airplanes coming on site soon so they better make something work.

(I would still love to see them try a SAN-FLL just to see what happens...)

Last week's thread showed AM reducing on this route.

That sparked some people to wonder about Y4 vs AM on the route and how the route was doing. WhatUSaid had indicated people should wait until this week's update. Looks like he was correct about AM.

Interestingly last week also had

and this week MAR is increased again.

Unfortunately, yes. In my opinion, it was one of the most symbolic routes of AA's past domination in the Caribbean. However, except for people going to SJU, DOM, PTP, FDF or EIS, their trip will not change, because their connection will be in MIA instead of SJU.

Quoting enilria (Thread starter):

**AA JFK-FLL APR 2>0.1 MAY 2>0 JUN 2>0 JUL 2>0 AUG 2>0 SEP 2>0 OCT 2>0
AA ORD-FLL APR 3>4 MAY 2>3

I'm not surprised about JFK-FLL, it was difficult for AA to compete on that route with their cost structure. However, I would expect them to return post BK. AA seems committed to FLL, because they have launched LAX-FLL and ORD-FLL was just 1 daily not so long ago.

I suppose, and I hope, that AA will keep all their slots at JFK to use them again once out of CH11.

*AA ORD-SJD APR 1.0>0.1 MAY 1.0>0 JUN 1.0>0 JUL 1.0>0 AUG 1.0>0 SEP 1.0>0 OCT 1.0>0

Don't know why this route was loaded as 1 daily, because, IIRC, in summer it only operated on Sat. and Sun.

AA MIA-SJO MAY 4>3 SEP 4>3 OCT 4>3

Almost all these additions and reductions are all usual changes in summer. The exceptions are SDQ and SJO (which see 1 less daily flight some months) and MAO and BSB (which are additions). It seems that AA doesn't load BSB as daily yet, maybe the flight isn't performing that good to support more weekly flights yet. Anyway, good to see MAO finally loaded.

When will UA have one schedule? Hard to follow what the real impacts are. They do seem to be exercising scheduling tweeks based on demand on a monthly basis. Not fun if you are the traveler, but saves them $$ so I'd guess it is here to stay.

That route is on subsidy. AA will only fly it for what they are being paid.

Without a subsidy, thats a waste of a plane. BGI traffic is pretty much limited to the East Coast and the UK.

Their inefficiency in getting this straightened out can't be good for business. A quick look at united.com for an STL-IAH-STL ticket departing 16 APR and returning 23 APR shows that the CO flights are already gone, but the UA flights being added aren't there yet. As such, the website shows only one STL-IAH option (a CO ERJ at 5:48 PM) without even providing any options for a connecting itinerary, while the return flight shows 2 non-stop ERJs and handful of connecting options.

If someone is looking right now for a STL-IAH ticket and doesn't want the one flight they offer in the evening, they may just be forgetting about United and looking elsewhere.

For example, the new DEN-RNO frequency is a CR7 operated by OO. DEN-ICT gets a new 50-seat RJ round-trip. But DEN-PHX actually loses two mainline round-trips with one being replaced by a CR7. Have they ever put RJ's in the DEN-PHX market? The new DEN-CMH flight is on an ERJ -- 1,155 miles on a 50-seater. YUCK.

This observation isn't criticism of your excellent and informative report -- it just illustrates the limitations you acknowledge, of course. I think it shows far more of a mixed bag at DEN; mainline capacity continues to fall year-over year, especially in competitive markets, while regional capacity gets the expected summer season bump.

It seems that between all aircraft, UA/CO is netting about 25 additional flights here, while WN is netting about 9 additional flights.

While F9 is attempting to cut some at DEN this summer season, it seems that whatever F9 cuts, either UA or WN is more than willing to jump into.......

If someone is looking right now for a STL-IAH ticket and doesn't want the one flight they offer in the evening, they may just be forgetting about United and looking elsewhere.

At this point, people looking to travel STL-IAH(-XXX) are likely buying discount advance purchase tickets, and much of this traffic is fungible between carriers, i.e. totally replaceable. As the date of flight draws closer, the schedule will be finalized, and the business travelers buying flexible tickets on short notice (the travelers the airlines are trying harder to attract) will have a firm flight schedule from which to choose.

Last week's thread showed AM reducing on this route.
http://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...eneral_aviation/read.main/5368253/
That sparked some people to wonder about Y4 vs AM on the route and how the route was doing. WhatUSaid had indicated people should wait until this week's update. Looks like he was correct about AM.

Interestingly last week also had

Quote:
AM FAT-GDL MAR 0.1>0.3

and this week MAR is increased again.

Last I heard, numbers on the GDL flights right now are very strong. The reduced frequency in February essentially gives us about the same number of seats that we had under MX years back and the loads look to be higher. AM may have underestimated the demand, who knows. Feb/Mar and September are usually the down months on this route. I'd rather have them cut the frequency to match demand that run empty planes back 'n forth. There's an added challenge because the traffic can very much be directional - huge numbers to Mexico in December but far less to FAT. In January, we've seen bigher numbers on GDL-FAT. It's a balancing act to match capacity to demand.

Yeah, PWM and BOS increases but a 50% MHT cut struck me as odd. My flights from MHT-CLE always seemed to be full!

It's also worth considering that BOS used to be almost all mainline, and now it's 80% RJ's. If they add a mainline jet on the route I'd be impressed. If it goes from 3X ERJ 1X 738 to 5X ERJ, on the other hand, that's a cut in my eyes even with the added frequency.

I asked this in a previous discussion about AA cutting flights out of JFK and did not get any responses but what is AA planning on doing with the unused frequencies. As far as I know at JFK its use it or lose it. Will they lease some out to other alliance members or B6 or maybe try to sell or trade? I know that some of the slots are in the of peak hours in the morning but I'm sure they don't want any falling in the hands of VX, DL, and B6.

There is no JFK slot scarcity. That's an A.net myth. Slots are scarce during peak periods. As long as AA is using all its peak slots, it's fine. It can park off-peak slots. Nobody wants them.

Not really true.

If you remember, AA just traded with B6 for 12 JFK slots and gave B6 7 DCA slots and 1 HPN slot.

So yes, slots at JFK are a scarcity through most of the day.

VX wanted more and couldn't get them.

As such, the website shows only one STL-IAH option (a CO ERJ at 5:48 PM) without even providing any options for a connecting itinerary, while the return flight shows 2 non-stop ERJs and handful of connecting options.

I haven't flown NK, but I have to think that these added fees have got to turn a lot of people off to them. Let's say someone sees an NK $79 fare, and thinks okay, I'll book, pay a few taxes, and it shouldn't be that much more. The next lowest fare that I can find is $125 on same route. Okay, then NK charges the tax, and then they start adding this charge, and then that charge, and by the time NK is through with their add-ons, the pax figures out it's just as much, if not more, then the next lowest fare that they could have paid. And then the NK crappy service.

So next time, then that same pax just moves over to the other airline, and they know roughly how much they're going to be paying there, and they'll refuse to get suckered in by NK again. That's basically happened to me elsewhere, and I'm sure that it happens to a lot of pax at NK.

Quoting TOMMY767 (Reply 42):
According to united.com it's 4x a day with no CO metal -- all 319s. I doubt that it will stick around with these kinds of frequencies. PHL-SFO is usually 1x a day on UA metal.

I checked myself last night and in April it was a mix of A319s and A320s. In May I did see one CO B738 PHL-SFO only (no return) along with 3 A319s. Other direction was 4 A319s still. In June it was back to all UA 319s.

I have a feeling the all A319/B738 schedule from May on is just using dummy aircraft right now, but granted 4 dailies is a hell of a lot of capacity against 2x VX and 5x US.
I think Big Foot is blurry, Its not the photographers fault. Theres a large out of focus monster roaming the countryside
