DLH Axes IAD-FRA?

Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:23 pm

I keep hearing that Lufthansa has axed their IAD-FRA flights, leaving UAL to do the work.

Can anyone comment?

I've heard tell of various changes such as introducing an A340-600 on some frequencies being dummies in anticipation of the 748 coming on-line, so that could be in the same vein, but I haven't seen anything about LH halting IAD-FRA.

The operator doesn't matter anymore on these routes, as they're part of the revenue sharing agreement. All members benefit equally, regardless of operator. It's very possible that you'll see some adjustments in the airline operating individual transatlantic routes going forward.

Generelly spoken you are right. But there are still passengers who book an airline, not an alliance. So if they want to fly Lufthansa, then they book Lufthansa, same with United. People still have their favorite and will book accordingly.

That's why I doubt that LH will axe both flights to IAD. I haven't heard anything at all that they want to axe it. 2 daily flights from FRA to IAD is what I know about.

Exactly, I would never have booked Spanair on flights to Spain even though they all had an LH flight number and I would avoid united on flights to the USA although they all have a LH flight number.

IAD is an important hub to hub destination from FRA as well as MUC.

I would be absolutely gob smacked if LH is pulling its metal off this route, JV or not. This is a large trunk route for UA/LH and they need all the metal they can, I dont see UA adding metal to it, although anything is possible i guess.

LH has recently established its own Senator (*G) and Business Lounges at Dulles terminal B near the gates it uses. Not much use for those departing on UA metal from terminal C/D but very useful for LH/OS departures. F/C/status passengers preboard directly from the lounge.

Exactly, especially for those considering lifetime status. On United at least, you only get lifetime miles for flights on United metal (and Copa now).

Exactly! Whenever I have flown between IAD and FRA or MUC, I always prefer LH to UA. Once, I ended up on a UA flight from FRA to IAD, and it was awful. On future trips to Germany, or destinations that involve connections in Europe, I will scrupulously avoid UA. If LH withdraws from IAD (which I doubt), I will fly another carrier to Europe and beyond.

I can't see LH cutting any routes for that matter, they're not Air Fance you know. But, then again in this economic climate anything is a possibility.

Never gonna happen... LH is smarter than that...

IAD 380 you really do not like UA that much?)) Out of curiosity, what didn't you like and who will be the substitute for LH to europe - AC, OS, SK, TK (assuming you will like to retain your *A miles)?

There is a difference between LH and UA. UA does not offer free alcohol in economy, while LH does and in general food is better on LH, however on UA you get 100% status miles if you are a member of Mileage plus for all economy classes, while in LH it is 50% on many lowest priced economy classes.

Will agree with that but you do get 100% mileage plus miles on TATL LH flights and the inter EU connecting flights on cheap coach. If you are a part of LH miles and more program then you only get 50% on cheap coach. Check out for more details http://www.united.com/page/article/0,,1189,00.html For some reason foreign airlines just do not like giving out miles as much as USA airlines.

They didn't cut in 2008/2009 when things were a lot worse so I don't see them cutting now when things are actually pretty good and demand is likely to continue to go up.

Hi SU - I dislike UA because of the way their staff treated my family when we flew with them from FRA to IAD. The check-in staff in FRA was unhelpful. The boarding process was chaotic. Shortly after take-off, my elder daughter asked for a new set headphones to replace a set that was broken. The FA ignored her at first, and then told my daughter not to bother her any more with such petty requests. Later on, the same FA was extremely rude to my younger daughter when serving dinner. The meals were not properly heated. Another FA snapped at my wife when she requested something for our daughters. When we flew on LH, we were treated as valued customers.

If LH withdraws from IAD, we will fly either another Star Alliance carrier, or AF, BA, or KL, even though they belong to other alliances. We have flown these carriers on other trans-Atlantic trips. Besides UA, there are other choices for trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific flights from IAD. Unfortunately, there are not many other options from IAD to South America.

Almost everyone I know prefers other international carriers to UA from IAD. Whenever possible, I will avoid UA for the forseeable future.
