Good for FR and good for BUD.
Although, the chances for a possible revival of MA will slink drastically I think......

Well done Ryanair, within hours as well, and they can have the routes flying in 2 weeks, Its great to see an Irish success story. With this it demonstrates they have so much muscle and ability to move quickly when opportunity knocks.

Well, they seem to have been beaten on their CRL route, as SN will operate a third daily frequency from BRU aleady as from next week, according to http://www.luchtzak.be/forums/viewto...7&t=46480&p=259987#p259979

Only basing 4 aircraft initially - I reckon that will grow pretty significantly in the next 6 months though.

They have a number of planes sitting idle over the winter, so it makes sense to get them back into revenue operation when such a good opportunity presents itself. Presumably there are crew members who are also relieved from duty or on less hours over the winter, but in this economic climate I should think it's not hard to gather enough staff to crew the flights.

Worth noting that this is not 100% finalised yet - "This largest ever investment in Hungarian aviation and tourism is subject to reaching final agreement with Budapest Airport today on costs, facilities and handling, and Ryanair’s Deputy CEO Michael Cawley has travelled to Budapest to finalise these negotiations with Budapest Airport and the Hungarian Government" (quote from the press release). Though they must be pretty certain the deal will be finalised to be accepting bookings

5 of the new 31 routes are a re-announcement. They were announced a couple of weeks ago (STB, DUB, BHX, BRS, BLQ). Out of the remaining 26, I've spotted at least one route, MAN, that isn't a Malev replacement

However it's still good for BUD that it has quickly replaced some of the lost capacity with FR, Wizz Air and others

I wonder if they could have done the same if this happenned 6 months later in August

Lets see how this plays out with WIzzair...

Wizzair have been very lucky until now, only competing with FR on a handful of routes... Now they are going to be competing head to head on numerous routes and this is the first time FR and W6 have had a base at the same airport.

Today they also announced they will be basing two additional A320's at BUD, from the summer. Their route networks are almost identical competing on all the below routes, with slight variations on summer sun destinations:

Madrid, Barcelona, London (W6 LTN and FR STN), Brussels (CRL), Stockholm (NYO), Gothenberg, Milan (BGY), Rome (W6 FCO and FR CIA), Pisa and Eindhoven.

Wizz Air invests HUF 25 billion in its Budapest operation

Looks like Wizzair will have to get use to it, as I think FR are also intending to open a base at the new Warsaw Moblin airport later this year, and this is where they are moving all their Warsaw ops to as well!

The East European market is extremely price sensitive!

I wonder at what expense these four aircraft are being sourced from? As it's the winter, FR has a number of aircraft parked up. But I wonder if any aircraft are being pulled from other bases to open up BUD or will have an impact on future bases like PFO that are due to open soon?

Unfortunately most of the routes are not Malev replacements. They offered an excellent hub for connections to Central and Eastern Europe which will be very hard to replace. Places like Varna, Burgas, Sarajevo, Tirana, Pristina and Tivat have just become a lot harder and more expensive to reach. Austrian is the big winner.

Wizz will have a frequency advantage on key trunk routes such as London and Brussels against FR, giving them something to differentiate themselves with, and possibly helping them to attract business passengers

LON: Wizz 21 per week, FR 11
CRL: Wizz 14 per week, FR 7
EIN: Wizz 13 per week, FR unknown but unlikely to be as many as 13
BGY: Wizz 11 per week, FR 7
Rome: Wizz 10 per week, FR 7
Madrid: Wizz 7 per week, FR 4
NYO: Wizz 4 per week, FR 2
GSE: Wizz 3 per week, FR 2

(Wizz and FR will have equal frequency to BCN and Bologna [FR use BLQ, Wizz FRL], Comparison not yet possible for Pisa or Palma as FR frequency unknown)

Indeed what's noticeable generally from Wizz's response is only 1 new route. Everything else is frequency increases. Their strategy seems to be consolidating existing routes and building a frequency advantage over FR

Also Wizz won't be competing with FR on:
Bucharest
Malmo
Bourgas
Bari
Dortmund
Tirgu Mures
Frankfurt Hahn
Naples
Turku
Catania (though FR will serve Trapani)
Corfu
Antalya

May or may not be a base. Quote from Micheal O Leary late last month
"We’re still talking. We haven’t got to where we’d like to get on costs. We’ll certainly be announcing something for when they open, which looks like it will be July, but whether it becomes a base I’m not sure. There is still work to do on the cost base."

Ryanair was due to announce another new base shortly. Maybe that has been delayed.

I would say fortunately. Not many Malev destinations could win me for leisure weekend or week breaks. Now I just have so many to choose from from Budapest, for a fare 10x less !

And for business I always fly Skyteam, so this is a win win win win situation for me.

And here the folks at SRQ complain about the way WN treats them. If only they knew what many of their peers across the pond have to go through!

If you have ever met Hungarian women you wouldnt say that..   Anyway, I am using FR now in April to my favourite off season destination Lanzarote. BUD-MAD-ACE . I am very happy with Ryanair at BUD. BUD-MAD vv is actually a W6-FR combo.

110 Euro return incl tax to the canary islands, unbelievable!
