Monarch A320 Painted In Wrong Colours

Fri Feb 03, 2012 6:14 pm

Turns out Monarch's new livery is slightly wrong according to this picture

"This was the one and only chance to see this livery as it was painted with the wrong shade of colour and after operating this flight to Gibraltar it will go back to be repainted"

Shame, I started to quite like it. I'm guessing it will be slightly darker. The usual monarch blue/black or will it be different? Anyone know?

The rumour I heard when taking the photo was that this was new, though I've also heard the mistake theory. Either way it made my day to catch it today!

Wuhoo! Either this was some massive publicity stunt, or someone is going to get their backside kicked. I just can't imagine how a company can 'accidentally' paint an aircraft in the wrong colours.

Either way, the result was a horrendous colour 'scheme' (although it can hardly be called a scheme when they just look so awful together).

Oh dear my mistake!  The 2nd pic looked as if the purple was toned down compared to the 1st, but I guess the sun made it look brighter.

I thought exactly the same at first and immediately thought they were 2 different aircraft. Then realised it was the same one and noticed the date

How long will the repaint take?

Less of a "oops we painted it in the wrong colours" more of a "wow we didnt think it would look this awful, quick hide it".

How can you mistakenly paint a plane...

Haha yes I agree 100%, I think this is more of a "oh dear what have we done" mistake.

Anyway im sure Monarch have set a new record for quickest new livery.

Are we sure that it wasn't painted correctly and then the company has decided to tweak it? It wouldn't be the first time and happens regularly with rebranding etc in all kinds of business.

Think it would look better if the purple was more like the current blue/purple colour.

Im also wondering how you accidentally paint a plane the wrong colour.

On this side of the pond, that scheme recalls this USA Regulation-era, local-service-carrier 70's classic:

Still not sure how you could make a mistake when painting an airplane

It's definitely doesn't seem like a mistake, I bet they had thought it looked bad (in which it did) and needed redoing.

Indeed Like I said they finaly got to look on it on an actual plane and realised how horrid it is. Conveniently they painted it the "new wrong" colour that their website has been running with for a while. Coincidence eh eh? yeah right. Apparently it needed more then 1 coat of Puke purple also because it wasnt strong enough?

Icelandair's TF-FIR was re-painted about a year ago, and it came back sans the blue belly:

as opposed to the usual white, yellow and blue as the rest of the fleet

We never got a real explanation as to why, but the story says the contractor messed up the job. 'FIR is currently in the painthangar for a repaint, and this time it will be white, yellow and blue!

Also, note that the styled "F" on the tail is actually a sticker and is almost never the same shade of yellow between planes, on some aircraft it's almost red, like TF-FIP, while on others it's almost white, like TF-FIZ.

Its a shame the aircraft only made 1 return flight to to Gibralta from Manchester, luckily the MAN guys were enjoying a cold afternoon in joes field when it floated past.

I believe it is now safely back into Airlivery for the 'New', but old dark purple to be applied, the aircraft is due to remain with the new yellow tail. Should be out and about next week. I think specsavers could do a deal with the paintshop to get their own plane repianted for free in return for eye tests.

So, for shiz and giggles...I went to their website. HOLY EASTER EGG. I am in agreement with everyone that have said this wasn't a painting mistake, as much as it was a "oh GAWD...the purple & yellow looks HORRID when it is on the side of an A320....QUICK...hide it!"

One has to wonder if the website colours now may also get tweaked?

Personally I like it, makes a change from the usual boring Euro-comply schemes we have these days! Let's get back to the era where we had CP Air, Court, Braniff and the likes - I think too much is emphasized on corporate image these days. The sky should be full of colour & fun, not dozens of airlines all with mediocre similar looking liveries.....When we fly, do we care what colour the plane is? Surely service rates higher?

Just my tuppence.........

When Air Livery did G-VXLG of VS, they did the tail a wrong shade of red. Then to top it off, the paint started peeling off and looked terrible. Its since been redone.

Also, when they painted the 1st VS plane in the new livery the paint had a 'blotchy' look on the tail.

My dad worked at FI Group in a high position, and he said that it was to get it quicker into service. It had a blue tail before and instead of spraying the belly and that, just add the logo sticker! Flew FIR from BOS to KEF last summer and it looked kinda weird with the white belly! Same explanation for FIK and LLX last summer, they didn't have time to repaint for the summer season so they had white bellies and engines.

Now that's true! I remember FIX was very light yellow, but when it was retrofitted with winglets, they repainted it and now its kinda orange-red!

From what it sounds like it was the wrong shade of purple, thats an easier mistake to make when mixing, however, the overall livery is correct.

Thats the issue you get when you get into gradients on logos. Also could depend on the airline, all of Delta's aircraft are full paints.

Aww I quite like this new Monarch paintscheme. Perhaps someone in management saw it afterwards and thought 'Ok, I'm not liking that very much'! Hence the redo.

That VS red actually looks good! They should use that shade as their default scheme! Although I wouldn't want VS to change their scheme too soon again, I think they have three versions at the moment.

That wasnt a "mistake" , it was simply a fault with the paint. It was supposed to have the altered metallic red appearance. They have since been unable to replicate the metallic effect and so have switched back to matt red in a slightly different shade.

I Count 5!

The original 2000 Scheme on all but 3x A346's and 1x A343
The 2005 21st birthday livery on G-VFAB
The 2006 Scheme on the 3x newest A346's with a white gradient on the tail
The 2007 scheme on 6x 747's and a single A343 with the purple gradient on the tail
The new 2010 scheme on 5x 747's and 2x A343.

They do use the metallic version still. Check out G-VELD and G-VAIR - the latest 2 painted. The only two with the old style red are the 2x A333's delivered straight from Airbus.

The red on G-VXLG was definitely a darker shade than G-VROC and G-VAST, the only other two in the 2010 scheme at the time. Now its been repainted again its a similar shade to the others.

You have to add G-VSXY and G-VKSS as a sub-scheme as the tail and engines are the wrong shade of red. I saw G-VELD towing in the dusk sunlight at LHR on Sat, the new colour scheme is truly beautiful, if only they can roll it out across the whole fleet and raise their game.

For those of us old enough to remember, the tail and lower yellow at aft is actually a rather nice reflection of the Monarch heritage:
