OneWorld Puts Kingfisher On Hold

Fri Feb 03, 2012 6:15 pm

(From the oneworld website)

"These are turbulent times for the airline industry in India and many other parts of the world. We have been working closely with Kingfisher Airlines over the past months and it has become increasingly clear recently that the airline needs more time to resolve the financial issues it is confronting before it can be welcomed into oneworld."

Yikes ... not a good week for oneworld ...

A bit swings and roundabouts - as I suspect it will be for all the alliances over the next months/years (and to an extent this is just a continuation of what has gone on in previous years).

Negative: Malev bust and Kingfisher postponed
Neutral (for the mo'): AA in Chapter 11
Positive: Air Berlin in; potential sale of BMi to IAG

But no great surprise this one....

I don't think OW really had a choice. The IATA clearing house has suspended Kingfisher. ( reported in the current Indian aviation thread)

I would think that valid working membership of the clearing house would be one of the non-negotiable criteria for membership. It is the first case I am aware of ( somebody feel free to correct me, if I am wrong) where a future member has been put on hold after a specific joining date has been announced.

( I am sure that AI never got as far as an announcement of actual date of accession) .

OT , I know, but you forgot a really huge positive for OW ... Almost certainly gaining TAM as part of LATAM.

I'd call AA in Chapter 11 a 'big' positive' !

They're 'in' and 'following' very good company after all.

Not a good week? I'd think a more accurate description is not a good year for Oneworld. Add Mexicana, JAL, and Air Berlin to that list. These carriers either went belly up or have some type of financial issues.

Correct. And Spanair just shut its doors, TAP is for sale, BMI is sold to IAG, LOT is being sold to TK, etc. This is a very difficult environment, pal. Many private enterprises are in trouble, and if they are located in countries that don't have the means to backstop the airline, then prospects are even dimmer.

You're right - perhaps I was just being a bit cautious on calling that one....

Ch11 is good for AA as it was good for UA, US, NW, DL a while back, JAL is getting back on its feet. MX and MA were a hit but were smaller players in the alliance. I will say though it seems odd that they took IT, they have been in bad shape for a while, jet would hav been much better. ALl airlines and alliances have their ups and downs, OW will recover.

You think if it were SkyTeam they would have accepted them anyway?

No, I don't think it would be possible to be a member of any of the global alliances without being an active member in good standing of the IATA clearing house. I could be mistaken, but I think AR's future membership of Skyteam was only announced after AR had sorted things out with the IATA clearing house.

Yeah I think SkyTeam would have. They'll take anyone, hehe.

I am the last person to be a skyteam fanboy... I have only flown on two Skyteam airlines and I wasn't particulary impressed by either of them... but I have to point out, that while everyone slags Skyteam off, they are the only one out of the 3 alliances not to have lost a carrier due to financial collapse ( .... at least not yet.... although obviously with AZ they came pretty close)

Any more news on Kingfisher? We received this today so was wondering if anything new had happened or just CX protecting themselves

Good Morning,

Today, we were advised by CX/KA to immediately deactivate all existing CX-IT & KA-IT IET/ ITA agreements
**lines removed**
Please note with immediate effect, CX and KA will cease to have any interline partnership with Kingfisher Airlines until further notice.

Regards

A similiar player?

How can you compare a 110 fleet airline with more than 11M pax a year with 70 destinations, 90 years, great experience and a 2.8B of sales versus a 20 fleet airline...
