BA Launch 3 New LCY Routes

Tue Feb 07, 2012 10:42 am

British Airways are to launch services to Menorca, Angers and Quimper from LCY from May 25th. Menorca & Angers will operate 3 weekly with Quimper going twice weekly.

LCY now has links to quite a few regional French airports.

Interesting! Two French routes that aren't otherwise flown from any LON airport.

Have Angers and Quimper previously been served from LON?

Might be wrong (not too sure) but I "thought" Ryanair flew to STN from Quimper a few years ago.

Oh boy am I happy at MAH being launched. Not without some expectation, but still very happy!

Very good news indeed. However, with the IB merger I thought BA might wanna look again at ALC, VLC, SVQ, XRY or MJV...

Nearly all the recent route announcments have been for Leisure routes. Has all the potential expansion to more Business destinations dried up?

I think for new Business Routes to open, you would need to invest in new planes to offer the early morning departures and late afternoon returns. All new routes are operated in the middle of the day to optimize fleet usage. And I think every major business center is now connected to LCY.

There would be no point, as soon as the West Coast main line was fixed, all the point to point traffic that had used VLM from both LPL and MAN got the train, it's a no brainer.

Interesting that two French regional destinations have been chosen, instead of other holiday destinations in Spain, Italy etc. This is distinctly CityJet territority.

Good to see BA expanding their links at LCY. All they now need to do is acquire some more A318's and get more LH routes rolling :P

The train has decimated domestic air traffic between London and Manchester. There's no way air travel can compete with the frequency and speed of the upgraded train service.

No question about it - central London to central Manchester every 20 minutes taking just over 2 hours.

Absolutely! If you're travelling rough centre-to-centre, the train, with its impressive frequency, pretty short durations, and generally much more pleasurable experience for such a trip, makes MAN-LCY completely uncompetitive and uneconomic.

Reminds me of SZ's NQY-PLH-LCY services: http://www.thisisplymouth.co.uk/Airl...e/story-12688965-detail/story.html

I managed to get LCY-PLH-NQY-PLH-LCY for £49 all-in (or something like that). Not bad.

In 2010 (April-December), per the CAA*, 18,680 flew LCY-NQY-LCY with WOW.

Amen to that! The trains are such a pain in the ass from Cornwall! I wish they'd reinstate NQY-LGW. I loved turning up at NQY and seeing a BA 737 there - ready to take me back home... I'm pretty sure the yields could never make it pay for them though. It was merely a slot warmer.

[Edited 2012-02-07 13:35:29]

Also, I'm no expert - would it make it any more viable to run such a route from LCY? I guess lots of people who work in the city have second homes in the Southwest, but I'm pretty sure it would still be pretty uneconomical.

If the service operated all year round on weekdays that equals roughly 18680 / 261 weekdays = 71.5 passengers per day or 35 passengers per flight on average. Thats not too bad considering it was a Dash 8-300.

I think BA could make a once daily service work quite well. Don't forget at that time there was also WOW services between NQY and LGW as well as Flybe. Now we have just 3 daily Flybe (the price has risen dramatically).

The ASW flights to LCY were a huge missed, or rather ignored, opportunity. The loads going up to London in the morning and back to the South West in the evening were fantastic, sold out on many services and ballpark 90% l/fs on the rest. The problem was the morning flights back to the South West and the evening return up to London, l/fs on those struggled to meet the high expectations which LCY's pricing structure demanded. What should have been in place, and initially planned, was the interline agreement through Eastern Airways with KLM, enabling NQY/PLH-LCY-AMS and onwards bookings which would have filled up the slack and let the route mature. But that stalled and didn't happen until after the LCY flights ended.

No but Milan is a much larger business market than Rome and there is twice-daily LCY-LIN service (CityJet Avro RJ85s).

In terms of business destinations I would have though FCO would have been a possibility. If WAW was tried, surely BA could give Rome a try or Venice for a leisure route?

Great news for BA and so good to see LCY being seriously utilised now. There's a definite market for Londoners using these routes and beats having an aircraft twiddling it's thumbs for several hours.

Last summer BA Cityflyer operated 5 times a week from LCY to IBZ:

BA8461 E90: d. 12:05 Day 1, 06:40 Day 5 and 13:40 Day 7
BA8463 E70: d. 15:00 Day 1, 07:05 Day 5

The current on-line oneworld timetable is showing no changes to any of the above detail for the second week of June this coming summer.

Similarly last summer BA Cityflyer operated 3 times a week to PMI:

BA8484 E90: d. 10:45 Day 1, 06:55 Day 5 and 15:35 Day 7

The above is replicated in all detail in the current timetable for June.

[The data for Summer 2011 above were collected from the oneworld on-line timetable in September 2010.]

It will be interesting to see if BA Cityflyer stops doing the weekend summer charters for tour operators and perhaps does their own weekend W summer flights.

These happen from GLA and not LCY due to LCYs runway closing over the weekends.

Doubt we will see more of this operation. LCY-JFK is such a narrow market niche. Perhaps it could work with Boston or Washington DC. But the Wall St.-The City business connection is so strong.
