Pics: Lufthansa's First 747-8 Takes Flight

Wed Feb 08, 2012 7:22 pm

Happened to be in the right place at the right time this morning when Lufthansa's first 747-8 taxied into position. Grabbed my camera in time to catch D-ABYA do its first taxi test and first flight. Gorgeous aircraft. Should be delivered next month.

Pics here:

Enjoy!

Thanks for the pictures. It's not the first one to be built, but first to be delivered if I understand correctly.

It's pretty easy to tell the 747-8 from a distance as its stretched upper deck is quite apparent.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Do you, or anyone for that matter, know which routes it will be run on initially? I think she's beautiful.

Amazing, amazing airplane. Beautiful that she is! Many happy years of flying to D-ABYA, to all those who are going to have the pleasure of crewing her, and to all passengers =)

Though I have to say that aesthetically, the upper deck is too long. The 747-400 hit the sweet spot in the looks department imho.

I do hope that LH will use this magnificent bird on FRA-ORD-FRA segment.

HAHA, I wish... Not a chance in a million years. Such flights are done from the high ranked fleet captains etc. I am only a small FO, so not a chance to get my fingers anywhere near the 748i until my time comes to fly it in line operation.

Quoting PEET7G (Reply 8):

Speculation, speculation   But who knows. The first route will be a shorter one which can be flown with one frame as we receive only one in March. So no HKG and PVG in the first weeks of service.

Yes, training for the pilots start in April. And then you need 2 landings in 90 days. So the training will take a while as this is difficult to keep the rating valid with only one airplane.
But I am looking forward to it.

I think the engine nacelles would look much better in blue, the grey looks like they are still in primer.

But great looking aircraft all the the same.

The upper deck is too long (the A380 is too short) - the 747 still looks much better. But I like the wingtips.

Fantastic, I wish you good luck with your training and would love a tour in the aircraft should we meet in the future!!! I am hoping to visit FRA to go spotting as soon as LH operates a decent fleet of 748's and A388's

I disagree, I think the 744 was too short, the 748 is awesome and the larger engines look sweet!

Indeed, but she almost looks too long. I am getting a sort of A346-feeling when seeing her. The B744 is better proportioned imho, just as the A345 is better proportioned then the A346.  . Still she is very elegant too see.

Nice pics IAD787.

But somehow the dimensions don't look right to me. The hump is too long and because of that and the absent winglets I find it aesthetically a step back from the 744. Still, I'm glad to see her enter into service at LH and to know that for many, many years to come it will be possible to fly a Boeing 747.

Finally, the engines look the right size, but now the hump is too long. The SUD was the "correct" length for the hump on a 747. Looked right. The 748 upper looks a little off in a white livery, just a tad too long.

What an awesome aircraft is this brandnew 748... The 747 is anyway my most preferred bird to fly on, i so much love the upperdeck ! No other AC can match that feeling to sit on the upperdeck of a 747! I'm so happy to know that LH bought this plane and honestly ohhh man...for that reason alone i will change from BA to LH in the future   I'm looking forward to my next flight in april from LHR to LAX on BA. I hope and wish that many new orders will come in the future.

I never made them.

You can 'remember' things in general, but you can't just attribute them to specific people implying we said them.

I always thought the 743 looked cool, and generally I like the 748, but I think the UD is about 4 windows too long. Or maybe it's because they didn't move the emergency exit so it looks imbalanced...

DXB and BOS first came to my mind as well. Both should be doable with one airframe, no? Other short route that gets the 744 nowadays is FRA-TLV, but that might be a bit too short?

Certainly longer looking, I like it. Its definitely the A346 of the 747 line.   I hope they bring it to YYZ so I can see it sometime.

I've never been a fan of the 747's looks but this one is even worse in my opinion. It's completely out of proportion, the 747 has been pushed too far. Saying that, the aesthetics of the 748F are reasonable.

But at the end of the day, aesthetics mean absolutely nothing to the airlines or the majority of passengers. I'm sure the 748 will do it's job well.

Wow. Simply amazing, she's longer than the A340, yet she's still aesthetically pleasing. Must be the engine chevrons, winglet, and the nose!

It's funny, when you look at the third image in the flightglobal article, you get a glimpse of how nice-looking a full double-decked 747 would look. Pretty decent, IMO. (one can wish..)

There was no reason to quote any of us. A simple statement like "I remember back in the 80s that many people didn't like the SUD, but it seemed to grow on people." would have worked just fine.

I'm sorry my quote bothered you. It was not meant to be personal or accusatory -- in fact, that's why I quoted four separate posters using identical language.

Great looking jumbo there....hopefully more will buy the 747 and keep this classic series around for a few more years. The only thing I can critique.....Lufthansa needs some more color on their planes....like a blue cheatline along the windows or something. Too bland a livery.
