OAG Changes 2/10/2012: AM/CO/DL/FL/UA

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

I'd imagine that CLE-LAS is going to PMUA metal, hence the cut.

Good to see CLE staying active.

I imagine this relates to the use of G7 and/or AX at CLE and the need to get aircraft to CLE.

It is their hub, AA is probably playing hardball with DL. But the thing I don't understand is MEM and CVG are only operated by AE ERJs whereas DL offered mainline to both destinations -- a superior product no less.

Equipment is 738. It is filed to the WG code. WN should not be able to file WG coded flights. If such a thing were possible imagine all the mischief airlines would get into corrupting their competitors' flight schedules. I don't know what it is.

How about this? Let me put on my tinfoil hat. Could it be that DL is going to make a bid for AA's MIA hub and they are doing this to reduce their overlap since they know route overlap is how DOT has traditionally decided whether deals are anti-competitive?

What's happening with BOS? AA tried to promote this route for a long time with double miles, etc and DL has been trying hard as well. This leaves with AF the sole carrier on this route (and may be higher fares too). Has BOS lost some of its premium pax or its the airliners trying to limit their TATL routes to hubs? Can't wait for JL to start their new service to boost the int'l capacity at BOS.

Seems like it, however, the AM reservation system doesn't change from week to week. Basic 3X a week 'til the Easter break, then daily, drops down to 4X immediately post Easter break, then back to daily in June/July. I was at the airport Friday evening around 9:30 and per usual, the Volaris line was maybe 50 deep already. AM, which has the 11:40p departure was pretty quiet. Traffic is heavier in-bound now, as the Christmas crowd continues to trickle back into town.

Perhaps it's simply MIA-MEM/CVG/MSP just aren't doing that well for Delta?

AA probably has the upper hand on MSP-MIA becuase they've been flying it for many years with a 738. NW flew MSP-MIA for years but when they merged with DL I don't think the route was as much of a priority. A lot of feed is filtered through ATL.

At least with CVG they are increasing FLL to 2x daily. Perhaps DL is consolidating back to FLL in the future?

DFW is seeing the first frequency added from DL's LGA hub from 6 to 7 daily trips since the original schedule came out. Does anybody know if the forward bookings are looking good and they are expanding or simply trying to compete better with AA's 15 daily frequencies. It seems they are following the same pattern since they added ORD, I think they started at 8 daily and will be up to 13 this summer.

The way UA does the schedules changes are absolutely retarded. They need to phase out the CO brand and just keep it to UA. It would be a lot easier to follow.

Take these UA changes with a grain of salt. Many routes swapping with PMCO metal so it's hard to get a grasp on it. IMHO BWI is strong and won't go anywhere. MSY is up and down and maybe better suited in the CO system where it's easier to route crews and metal via IAH.

Several hits to SEA international service. YYZ had been 2x daily E190s for a while now in the summer. Fares to anywhere in Eastern Canada are crazy high most of the time, though, so perhaps loads are the problem and not yields. The strong CAD has to be hurting AC as well.

5x weekly for KE in the summer is also surprising given the strong feed/connections from AS. Perhaps DL has taken TPAC market share.

I think WN/FL may have gotten approval from DOT to fly this route over Frontier. I have nothing from DOT or WN/FL telling us this but FL website and Amadeus.net are showing something else. When searching on the FL website for nonstop flights to CUN from MDW, the outbound flight is shown as a connection in ATL but the inbound flight is showing the nonstop flight with the same flight number WN/FL gave the DOT in their application, FL 098. You can't book on this flight yet.

Amadeus is showing the flights starting March 11... We need an official press release. Come on FL/WN and DOT release your answer.

Looks like it is on their website. It seems like a mistake unless they are supremely confident they will win so they loaded it with the inventory closed so they can start selling seats immediately upon approval. I guess it is only illegal to sell the seats, not list a flight.

I'm just not sure I see why they would do this unless it is an error. If it had been awarded it would be posted on the DOT site. Somebody here would have seen it.

Looks like it is on their website. It seems like a mistake unless they are supremely confident they will win so they loaded it with the inventory closed so they can start selling seats immediately upon approval. I guess it is only illegal to sell the seats, not list a flight.

Poor wording on my part, I had meant it is not on the website to be sold, but it is indeed showing up in the schedules as been pointed out.

Quite possibly a mistake especially since like Mexicana had said I only see it one way--CUN-MDW, and not other direction, which your OAG shows, MDW-CUN but not CUN-MDW. (I know you post them as round trips).

JFK-HOU is interesting as they just shifted it from IAH to HOU in the fall.

I also notice CVG-HOU is gone.

Is Delta thinking of exiting HOU and concentrating on IAH?

Doubtful they would pull out of HOU-ATL. The CVG and JFK flights were tied together - they use the same aircraft that runs CVG-HOU/IAH-JFK.

ORD-PHX down to 2 daily? I've never seen UA's frequency between ORD-PHX this low. Must be a combination of sending more connecting traffic via UA's other hubs and/or using US. Needless to say, it looks like they've lost serious share on O&D traffic from PHX to ORD.

Probably CO metal picking up some turns.

Bullseye. Did they buy Vacation Express???

Don't pay attention to the directionality in my report. Since showing both directions would cause the report to be double-length, I often just put the cities in alphabetical order unless they are hubs.

I think there is still a ton of shifting between UA/CO that it is tough to track these two.

ORD-PHL is down 2 to only 5, that would be horrible considering AA only flies ~2 mainline and then CR7's. IAH-PHL is 5>3 presumably because UA will put the crap 319's on the route but in the past I've only seen 1 UA IAH-PHL listed. SFO-PHL was boosted to 4 on UA and I believe 1 CO frequency only one way, now it looks like UA has pulled it back down to 3 which is normal for the summer.

Ha, well that is good news. When I looked at the schedule a month ago it was 4x on CO 73x's and 1x on a UA 319. IAH-PHL is pretty elite heavy especially during prime business travel times on Mon/Thurs/Fri when there can be 30-50 elites on the upgrade waitlist.

Yeah, the 319 is UAs dummy code while 738 is CO's.

Using the date Mexicana757 posted--March 11th, the schedule showing non-stop does not appear anymore on the website.

I understand that, but for this situation, it is odd that you show CUN-MDW in OAG, and Air Tran's schedule ONLY had allowed a CUN-MDW direction as N/S but MDW-CUN still showed a connection.

As I reported above, that doesn't seem to be the case.

US CLT-ROC MAY 1.0>1.7

US DCA-CLT MAY 12>11
US DCA-DFW MAY 3>1.3
US DCA-PBI MAY 4>3
US DCA-RSW MAY 3>0.9
US PHL-DCA MAY 10>9
US PHL-YHZ APR 3>4 MAY 3>4
US PHX-TUS MAY 11>10

A couple of things stand out here. DCA is getting a lot of Frequency reductions despite the slot deal. I wonder if with the FAA bill being approved if they feel they are going to get some BP slots. But still, May would be too soon to launch such service given the process. DFW is the one that really shocks me here, I would have thought DFW would gain DCA frequency out of this. Unless US is focusing on underserved destinations with RJ's trying to get a fare premium for ns to DCA. SBY going to 3 from CLT could be related to a Dash 8 pulldown, but I don't know the details. On paper, CAE would appear to be related to the ZW MX base in CAE, and rumored Crew Domicile opening (Management at ZW has indicated as a result of the Slot Deal, the RDU Domicile is likely to close, and a Domicile is likely to be opened in either CLT or CAE) That being said, ZW's CLT presence is going to be reduced in the near future, and ZW will likely be flying longer stage lengths.

YHZ being increased tells me that RW has had much better luck up there than ZW did, since CAT II certiifcation is critical in that cuty.

TUS losing one freq is likely to free up an OO plane for an SLC RON instead due to the OO mx base in SLC.

If memory serves me AQ flew a 737 with extra fuel tanks. I suspect AS is using the 738 or 739. The stretch edition makes the 5 to 6 hour flight a little more tolerable.

I think the reductions are to fund some additions that should be online sometime this weekend, once the schedule change for this weeke finishes processing. Also in the Summer DCA gains MVY and ACK service.
