AC L1011 Retirement And Temporary Redeployment?

Fri Feb 10, 2012 8:52 pm

Watching an old video on the net of an Air Canada L1011 (C-FTND), i read the description which said Air Canada retired all their TriStars and then reactivated FTND along with 2 or 3 others and painted them in the new colors (dark tail, all white fuselage) Im guessing it got stored wearing the Red livery?. They lasted only around a year before returning them to storage. There is no date to the video.

If true why did they do this and has any other airline retired an a/c type then later
bring it back into service??

They were brought back by Hollis Harris & Co. to cover for delays in receiving the 767-300s or some such, depends who's version you believe.

The date was approximately 1994. I believe they were used mostly on YYZ-LAX, perhaps some other routes. As I recall, they were configured in a 7-abreast Business Class + 9-across economy.

I definitely flew YYZ-FRA on one back in that time...

Just to confirm these were the older L-1011-100's (first delivery 1973); not the newer L-1011-500's? (most were sold to DL)

Three were taken from the desert in the mid to late 1990s.

They were originally deployed LAX-YYZ-YVR-Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

The only one I hadn't seen was the one they didn't bring back, C-FTNF, bit of a dog apparently.

I see the crappy edit function is still (not) working. To finish the above:

The aircraft were configured in a 54J 2x2x2, and 184Y 2x5x2. With the high J cabin capacity, they were deployed on high J routes like YYZ-LAX-YYZ and YYZ-YVR-YYZ. As noted above, the -100/150s sometimes were put on the Atlantic with equipment substitutions.

This thread reminds me that just recently I was wondering what airport in the world gets the most L1011 traffic today.
...are we there yet?

Think that 1 (ZD949?) is stored at Marshalls in Cambridge.

In his book (Straight From the Top) about his era at Air Canada, Robert Milton says he was instrumental in this, that AC was using the wrong a/c at the time for the route and that him bringin the L1011s out of the desert made them loads of money on those routes (YYZ - LAX/YVR).

Those redeployed AC L-1011s used to make some maintenance works at Lisbon (TAP's MRO) as well as Royal Airlines' did. I have some collecting stuff from that time.

When I heard AC bringing back L1011s I told my dad he should fly them and so he did for awhile until the plane were no longer in needed.
