Why Is There A Delta 747 At BWI Today?

Fri Feb 10, 2012 9:39 pm

Title says pretty much everything, there's a DL 747-400 at BWI today and I'm curious as to why. Sporting charter maybe?

That is ship 6310, the new ship with the Lie-Flat Seat mods. Our flight remarks show is is in BWI for the next few days finishing up MX and testing on those mods.

DL currently operates 2 Channel missions for AMC

BWI-RMS-KWI-RMS-BWI
-and-
BWI-RMS-AVB-IUD-AVB-RMS-BWI

One of the missions will go to Atlas in March.

I know the bird that came in on Thursday was 6309...not sure if this is the same one or a different one. Unless 6309 went out on Thursday evening I would assume it's the same one, although if it's 6310 I'm going to see if I can get some photos of the new seats!

I see her almost everyday when I work our inbound international flights (FL) CUN-BWI and MBJ-BWI flights 4 and 1061.
She looks massive when up front and personal! I do wish DL had at lest their jumbos in the classic Widget theme. I wouldn't even have minded a combination of the classic widget livery on the fuselage and the "Wavy Gravy" tail treatment.
The current mostly white body especially on a bird such as the 747-400 looks too generic like it's an afterthought.
BTW a couple weeks ago I got to tour her and see those cool seats. Even the main economy cabin looked inviting!
The one I toured looked like it had some years on her.

They're not the only carrier doing this and I sometimes wonder if that is intentional so that should the aircraft go to another carrier or the carrier merge, it is cheaper to paint; you replace the name and do the tail. Or, maybe it is just cheaper to paint? Or maybe the airlines have lost their imagination?

When DL first came up with this scheme, I didn't like it at all......being an old, DL veteran, I wished to see something closer to the old Widget scheme. However, I have grown to like it......I don't LOVE it, but it's ok. On a plane the size of the 744, I think the Widget and the font should be larger, though.

I find it odd that DL would use the first 744 converted to the lie flats to do military charter work. You'd think they'd stick it on the TLV run, or something like that.

Do we know that it's 6310?

Acars showed 6309 coming in Thursday and still there.

Well I'm even more confused as according to flightaware N669US (ship 6309) hasn't flown since it arrived in DTW on 01/24, and N670US (ship 6310) hasn't flown since it arrived in DTW on 02/05, having flown DTW-NRT-MNL-NRT-DTW as it's inaugural flight with the new flat-bed seat mods done. So if it is ship 6310, then flightaware needs to update it's flights!

FA is a little behind. Acars shows 6309 flying out of BWI for the last few weeks. 6310 shows flying DTW - NRT but nothing since landing in DTW on Feb 5. If it's there, it could have ferried to BWI and just didn't show up on tracker.

There is only one 747 here, so I am willing to bet it is still 6309. I have been here every day since it landed and it has been sitting in its usual spot.

this plane looks like it was an 5Y plane with their logo painted over, you can tell because the tail paint line slopes forward.

Just drove by and it's still there, parked on the ramp off the WDS International Terminal. Oh how I wish regular customers could ride that beauty over the Atlantic from BWI!

It was actually always a UA a/c, but Atlas leased it from UA and just returned it a few months ago - I guess UA took the opportunity to do a quick repaint instead of the PMUA colors. I thought this a/c had the UA interior and Atlas left it that way. DL and UA will take a lot of the remaining charter business from the all-charter airlines - part of what is putting WO and NA under. The military (and anyone else out there) likes the forward cabin and is a nice change from the cattle cars especially when you have a DV onboard.

I can't back this up, but I'm willing to bet this is the case because it is the only bird with the new seats and they may be looking to do something like they did with LHR and being able to say all aircraft flying there have these new seats. Until they have more, this could obviously be difficult. But also like I said, I have nothing to back that up with.

According to flightaware, N669US (ship 6309) is flying DL 268 from JFK-TLV this evening. So surely someone can find out which aircraft is at BWI and whether it's still there.

The boys at the MAA always assign F-17 for DL when a bird is resting between AMC trips.
All one need do is drive across Aviation Blvd to see the bird having a nap on the ramp.

An interesting side note: DL has ASIG doing the ramp work (including cleans) not their own
staff.

Probably just ferried it to JFK and no 747 is there now.

ASIG is acutally the contractor that has all the AMC military contracts, they sublet it to the commercial airlines.

Acutally, and I don't have the exact number, its much more than two. We have two that go through ATL, and ASIG took them both from Atlas. The line runs DFW-ATL-HHN-KWI (and about every other one goes on to KBL), and returns the same, KWI-HHN-ATL-DFW. They've been running every other day since the last week in January. We ferry an aircraft to any number of bases then through a port such as BWI about every 5 days, and in between the reg one in ATL, we ferry another to HHN that makes a separate leg to the middle east from there. The regular legs are 76Ds (767-400s), and the ferrys are usually 76Us (767-300ERs with winglets). We've sent two 747s from ATL since starting the runs.

In ATL, ASIG handles the check in process and accepts the psgrs bags, then passes them to us for loading. There agents actually come to the gate to handle the boarding process, ususally assisted by a DL Redcoat.
