Dulles "H" Gates

Sat Feb 11, 2012 11:53 am

Where are these and who uses them? I thought everyone was either in AB or CD (except of course US in the main building)

They're designed to board flights departing from the hardstands between the C/D concourse and the new ATC tower. They're only used now for charter flights - pax go there and get on the mobile lounges and go out directly to the aircraft.

AeroSur's three weekly flights to Bolivia are the only scheduled flights that use the H gates. The others are charters.

Saudia uses a gate for their departure, I believe the arrival uses a hardstand though. Same with Ethiopian and Turkish if I remember correct.

Saudi and Ethiopian both use the gates in the A/B Gates for arrival and departure. Turkish and Qatar use the H Gates for arrival (with the plane mates) and use the gates for departure. Aerosur uses the H Gates for both arrival and departures

Are Turkish, Aerosur, and Qatar the only ones who still use the plane mates?

Um rarely, a Delta international flight from Cancun (summer time) uses them to transfer passengers to IAB. But yes those are the only ones that use the plate mates straight to the plane. But plane mates are still used to transport international arriving passengers to IAB and FIS. Sometimes if a gate is down, they'll use the plane mates to deboard and board.

I've arrived late at night from Salt Lake City on DL 738s, and we've been transferred directly to mobile lounges with no gate involved. The first time it happened, I thought there was a security issue at the airport. The next time it happened, I moved with the crowd and shut up.

Btw, this was before the Aerotrain opened to B Concourse, and late at night you had to walk the full-lengh of B Concourse to the tunnel entrance -- down two flights of escalators -- walk through the quarter-mile-long tunnel all alone -- then up the other side to baggage claim -- all after midnight.

Btw, a couple of times, I swear I saw Freddy Kreuger down there

Delta and American find it easier to deplane their extra RON's directly onto Mobile Lounges from the hardstands. They both have more overnighters than gates. They are towed over in the morning after the first departures.

Since Qatar parks at the H gates for arrival which is usually @2:30pm, it was already at the departure gates @4pm one day when I happened to go there.

Are they able to clean the plane that fast and have it ready for departure? Also, why bring it to the gate afterwards as from a previous posting, airports charge for gate use? If the plane is brought back to the gate @4pm,then why even bother going to the H gates?

Since QR has only one flight a day, I assume they rent out the gate to others.

Thanks,

As for the cleaning and catering operations, Qatar may choose to do that on the gate but I am not sure.

All the A/B gates (except maybe the United Express area) are common-use, although the airlines usually have the same gate assignments.

QR shares the gate and costs with SV. Since QR comes in while SV still is at gate they go to the hardstand and then tow over after SV leaves. QR has almost a 8 hour ground time at IAD. On Mondays and Tuesdays when SV does not opperate, they go straight to A15 on arrival.

Interesting. How many airplanes do they RON at hardstands? Seems like there are plenty of free gates late at night; surprised AA and Delta don't use those.

Usually both and AA and DL have 1 or 2 extra overnighters than they could accomidate on their own gates. Even though there are free gates at night they a lot more money than parking at a hardstand. AA only has 2 gates and Delta has 4.

They don't leave till almost 10 PM each day so they have a little under 5 hours to turn the plane around at the gate which is plenty. And also, since Qatar is a 777-300ER with around 330 seats, it is a lot faster to deplane with plate mates at 3 doors compared to the 2 when it's parked at the gate.

Yea during the mornings after a AA pushback, I would see the crew drive back out to the hardstands to tow another plane to the free gate. Usually there's a DL CRJ parked out on the hardstands that they'll tow over later in the morning
