Allegiant Takes Flight From Gary Wednesday

Sun Feb 12, 2012 6:31 pm

This has been a long time coming. A successful airline begins service at GYY. I hope it does well and will become a stepping stone for additional air service to come.

Allegiant Takes Flight From Gary Wednesday

"Interim airport director Steve Landry says the airport is ready. Landry said there’s been weekly teleconferences with Allegiant which hired the Gary Jet Center to process passengers and baggage and ground service.

“We’ve been preparing the terminal building, putting up banners and making sure the ticket counters reflect Allegiant will be there."

Note in the article at the left under the photo the "timeline" of all the various "airlines" that served GYY.

I used to live in Northwest Indiana, and truer words cannot be spoken. GYY is a facility that deserves a chance to succeed, and I think Allegiant will finally put GYY on the map. G4 is the proven scheduled airline that GYY has needed for years, and I wish them well there.

Hopefully, this will be the first of many G4 routes from GYY, including LAS and/or AZA when the runway extension is complete. Who knows... maybe G4 could start an LAX/OAK-style base at GYY to serve Chicago from smaller Midwestern cities.

G4 is a viable airline to operate out of GYY, unlike endeavors gone terribly wrong in the past. People love low cost fares and I feel they will be able to draw a number of people, with proper marketing, from the southern suburbs of Chicago.

you know that potentially may work down the road the more I think about it. Chicago is a pretty popular place to visit, I could see it working for some far flung midwest / plains cities where Chicago is too far to drive to. Places like GFK and MOT, RAP, FSD in the Dakotas, Grand Island Neb, Duluth MN etc and maybe some places out east like Plattsburgh or GSO and ILM in the Carolina's. Something to ponder I guess. How easy is access from GYY to downtown Chicago?

Good News but did they finish the runway? I heard G4 wasn't coming until they fixed and lengthened it.

GYY sits right off I-90 (the Chicago Skyway Toll Road) and is about 35 minutes from downtown Chicago, so it would be easy to get to Chicago by car. Buses also link GYY with the South Shore Line trains to Chicago and South Bend.

Still under construction. They were originally going to start with GYY-LAS, but decided to do GYY-SFB instead because of the near-term runway construction and railroad tracks. G4 isn't ruling out more cities when the runway extension is completed, though.

G4 already has a base in RFD. Also GRR was a short lived base for G4 but that closed last year.

True, but GYY is much closer to downtown Chicago than RFD is, which would make GYY better suited for a tourist-oriented G4 base.

The Chicago area is no doubt a large visitor draw.

But G4 right now seems to be following this November 2008 presentation slide about potential future destinations.
http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/da...10465908071682/g287341mm05i008.gif

As the slide mentions they started OAK and SAN in June 2008.
SW Florida (via PGD) started March 2009.
MYR started April 2009.
LAX started May 2009.
Savannah started in Nov 2010, but ended in July 2011.

G4 was part of the New York slot auction but did not win. I would guess they are considering other options to serve NY now.
Hawaii is next up, they say they still are on track for service to start in the 2nd half of this year.

The Chicago area might someday become a destination G4 expands to bring in tourists. But I expect with flag-carrier approval they may turn their eyes to Mexico/Caribbean spots first while they expand Hawaii and add New York.

I think what he is saying is that it will make a better place for bringing tourists into Chicago as a destination. RFD is great for attracting people from Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois to fly to places like LAS, SFB, etc.

is RFD really a "base" though for Allegiant, in the sense GRR was? It only serves SFB, PIE, LAS and AZA. Just seems more of a large station than a base. I don't recall Allegiant listing it as a base, it was just more of a large station. They used to have FLL but that got cut.

Congrats to GYY, but I guess the $1M question at this point for either the airport or Allegiant is what are the projected numbers? Short of the one guy in the article whose immediate contacts are excited for GYY service, are there any legitimate sources to indicate that a plethora of tickets have been presold?

You could go to Allegiant's website and look at the ticket prices for the various date and get an idea of ticket sales. Be aware that the amount time between the announment of service and first flight has been abnormally short.

G4's "destinations" are sunny warm places, how could that market Chicago as a "destination" year round?

Indeed it is, this city can support 757 service to LAS. I believe they have LAX flights and do they/did they have flights to PIE one point from RFD

I think it is actually bigger than GRR was...Two planes are based there I believe

Yet G4 is looking to start service to NYC as a destination, not just as an outbound city. Its not exactly a sunny warm place either.

The runway should not be the only one to blame. Pace did GYY-LAS on the 757 without any issues.

Also Southeast Airlines ran to both SFB and PIE from GYY with the smaller engine DC-9s.

Long story short it would be nice to see G4 run the 757 to GYY-LAS instead of LEX, I believe its LEX....???

they also market BLI as a destination too, that would be the last place I think of sun and warmth

I wish G4 the best at GYY although GYY has a track record of airlines going out of business (Southeast,Skybus,Pan Am II,Skyvalue and Hooters Air) I just think that in order for the airport to succeed that the south shore train needs to come directly into the airport like in SBN that would attract more people. Having a bus that goes from the south shore to the airport in that neighboorhood in not the best idea.

But we all know that if G4 doesnt think that they will do well in a city they will pull out we will wait and see

When GRR was a base G4 had two planes based there, as well as flight crews, and mx personnel.

I've been a supporter of GYY for years. Glad to see G4 starting service. I predict down the road we will see service to various hubs, MSP/DTW/ATL etc...
