LX 333 On Short EU Flights

Mon Feb 13, 2012 2:05 am

I was looking at the rotations of the A333 fleet of SWISS and remarked some intra-european flights, especially to DUS, LHR and BRU. are these flights for the 330-crews and to keep the minimum amount of takeoff/landings at the requiered level? or is there another reason behind?

examples:
LX 326/10 333 HBJHF ZRH LHR
LX 316/11 333 HBJHF ZRH LHR
LX 1018/11 333 HBJHF ZRH DUS
LX 316/12 333 HBJHF ZRH LHR

and planned are:
LX 1018/13 333 HBJHD ZRH DUS
LX 786/14 333 ZRH BRU
LX 1018/14 333 ZRH DUS
LX 786/15 333 ZRH BRU
LX 786/15 333 ZRH BRU

Yes they are used for training flights.

You can check some comments about it on the Swiss Aviation Thread.

Back in the day, the MD11 flew ZRH-GVA-ZRH for the same reason.

Back in the days, SR (and possibly LX too) used to schedule an MD11 on one of their morning ZRH-LHR flights that connected from Asia/Africa. KL had until even more recently a 763/A330 flight AMS-LHR for the same purpose.

SR then LX operated A332s on LX316 for a couple of years before downgauging to A321s.

SR also used the A332 / MD11 on flights to FRA and I think even MUC in the late 1999's

If I remember correct, SR also had daily widebody to MUC and FRA...

Wish we had more wide-body opportunities flying city to city here in the US, aside from 767s, which I don't consider a widebody in the A330/747/777 sense (no offense 767s). Delta uses occasional 777/A330 LAX-ATL or ATL/JFK. And United an occasional 777 IAH-EWR or ORD-SFO-DEN. US Airways used A330 PHL-CLT for a brief time. But wish it was more. Oh well, such is the economics of air travel. The mighties need to be used abroad.

LX should send 333s on ZRH-DME, I am pretty sure it could fill them at a profit, look at BA operating 767s and 744s on DME.

I sure would like having them on the DME runs! Those flights are always packed to the gills, and personally on the red eyes, I would love to have the flatbed seats!
I wish there was still a flying boat service on the African Lakes!
