FedEx And Valentine's Day

Mon Feb 13, 2012 11:35 pm

Do many airports see increased FedEx flights on this holiday? Drove by FLL at 630pm today and there are 3 MD-10 and two MD-11's on the ramp. Are these flower shipments from South America or just a busy Monday at FLL?

Probably flowers from South America. Mondays are not normally busier than any other day, at least on the airline side of the operation. V-day is the third busiest time of year for FX and we do ramp up flights for the holiday, but that kind of capacity is way over what FLL would need. Leads me to think FLL is an entry point for the flower shipments that feed the entire system.

All I know is they better have proper capacity to BDL or else I'm gonna be in the dog house!   . Any idea on how many shipments they will handle for valentine's day?

Where does FedEx fly to from FLL besides for MEM of course. From what I read online at fedex.com seems like MIA is their Latin American hub. I am sure MIA will/did have plenty of flowers come in. According to FedEx 80% of Roses come from Ecuador and Colombia, FX does fly to Quito from MIA.

THAT is the second-busiest time of year for FX.

Ugh, tell me about it. The 757s have helped a lot with the narrowbody dispatch reliability, and I'm hoping the 767s will do the same when they come online. Assuming FX retires some of the oldest build MDs.

For right now, EWR, IND and AFW.

Other than MEM, AFW, EWR, IND per search on www.flightaware.com.

I know this isn't the case, but when I think of "flower shipments from South America" I get the image of a MD-11 hull full of loose red roses just piled as high and as deep as they can be fit. But it does beg the question - how are flowers packaged for transportation between hemispheres on an aircraft*?

*how are they packaged within the pallets, I mean?
