Lion Air Firms 201 MAX Order

Tue Feb 14, 2012 6:24 am

Boeing, Lion Air Finalize Historic Order for up to 380 737s

- Airline orders 201 737 MAXs and 29 Next-Generation 737-900ERs worth $22.4 billion
- Lion Air is launch customer for 737 MAX 9

Boeing and Jakarta-based Lion Air finalized a firm order for 201 737 MAXs and 29 Next-Generation 737-900ERs (extended range) Tuesday on the opening day of the Singapore Airshow.

"The 737 MAX is the best choice for Lion Air and the best airplane to serve our passengers," said Rusdi Kirana, Lion Air Founder and President Director. "We're excited to be the first airline in Asia to fly the 737 MAX and to be the global launch customer of the 737 MAX 9."

With orders for 230 airplanes valued at $22.4 billion at list prices, this deal is the largest commercial airplane order ever in Boeing's history by both dollar value and total number of airplanes. The agreement, first announced last November in Indonesia, also includes purchase rights for an additional 150 airplanes.

A very risky play by both parties, but time will tell if it pays off.

Great stuff dude, I check out the Boeing.com website everyday, man oh man, what a large order of airplanes, valued at $22.4 billion. Everyone loves the Boeing 737, they surely exceeded customer expectations for the 737 program from the beginning, I never thought Boeing would go beyond the 737-900ER, but its just a blessing from the Almighty Creator of all the worlds. The new 737 MAX baby, yea its so damn beautiful, I compare it to my 2012 Honda Civic EX, its like digital glass cockpit almost, and like 787 Dreamliner, man thank Allah (God) I love my car its like an airplane baby. God Bless Boeing.

Well, we'll see how many are delivered, but I am more interested in why they chose the -900ER when they are switching deliveries to the -800 due to financing. Also, do we know if all the MAX's are -9's or is it left open still?

According to Max Kingsley-Jones of Flightglobal tweeting from the conference, the order will consist of both -8 and -9s. No numbers mentioned, however.

One really does wonder why they made such a song and dance about launching the MAX.

As long as I'm not expected to have to do it, I have no problem with it.

I see very little risk for Boeing. It's not like they're basing a complete new-build off of this one order. Even if it is not as much of a smashing hit as the 737NG (which I suspect it probably will be), there will undoubtedly be plenty of other orders to offset the loss of this one should it ever occur.

Fortunately they're not a.netters. If you read this site, you'd think that the A320 is a poorly computerized, fragile deathtrap without the range to get to the next town, or, alternately, that the 737 only fits midgets and hasn't changed since 1969.

Well of course it did not 'need' to be brought into it. Rather, the original poster 'chose' to make note of it in his comments.

But back to Choice. Cool for Boeing. Anxious to see how many of the 8max LionAir will choose. I love the 739ER (happy to see more of them find homes). However I am anxious to see some final specs on the 9max! Narrow Body market is getting interesting....nice product improvements all around!

This is great news. I noticed that the 900 MAX engine nacelles are almost completely round. Even rounder than than the Embraer 170-190's engines which are actually ovoid. Is it my eye sight going South or is this correct?

Boeing's PR showing the front of the nacelles makes them appear to be effectively round, without the flat bottom of the current CFM56-7 family.

Everyone on a.net said they'd never take all the 739ER's when the made the original order and that seems to be working out well.

Congrats to all parties. Impressive order.

It's 44 better than Skybus.

(Though I am not sure Skybus ever took delivery of any of the 65 A319s they ordered in 2006. It looks like most of their active fleet prior to going under came from other carriers/lessors).

I don't quite get this logic. As others have pointed out, what is the risk for Boeing? If Lion Air cannot take all deliveries, Boeing gets to keep the deposits and can re-sell the slots, quite likely at higher prices.

Aircraft manufacturers would be very foolish to refuse "ambitious" orders. Not all of them work out, but should Boeing have refused Southwest and Ryanair? Should Airbus have refused Easyjet and Emirates (for the A380)? Despite all the skepticism of years past, Emirates is taking delivery of, and paying for, one A380 after another...

The Lion Air order is a great coup for Boeing, no matter how you look at it. Congrats to Boeing and Lion Air.

A huge order, however I hope Indonesia get their safety act together. I know things are getting better - but they will need to be very good to operate such a large fleet logistically.

Now, for Boeing to live up to it.

PIA's 5 777s aren't listed, either. Might be the final paperwork wasn't completed in time for this week's update.

My guess (and that all it was) is that the papers were not signed soon enough on the 14th for it to be included. There might very well be a last-minute snag that's holding up the signatures themselves, but again, my hunch would be it's timing more than anything.

Quoting Stitch (Reply 29):

The Boeing statement I read (which I can't seem to find online now) said that the order was not firmed, and in the typical Boeing PR language, went on to read how "we look forward to finalizing this agreement, at which time it will appear on the Boeing Company's Orders and Deliveries website" . . . or something to that affect.
