Difference Between B737-300,-400,-500, Etc....

Mon Oct 09, 2000 12:06 pm

Does anyone know an easy way to tell the difference between Boeing 737-300, 400, 500, etc.... in flight, that is just looking at it in flight, not having any pre-flight knowledge (i.e. pilot, mechanic?) also, does anyone one know where i can get a sillouete chart of commercial aircraft, such as one's pilots in wwII used for ships and enemy aircraft? any help would be appreciated

On the ground, the best way to do it is by window configuration, I can't answer for it in the air, because no commercial jetliners fly over my house. Jane's Aircraft Recognition Guide, a $20.00 book, gives silhouettes and basic stats for 500 different civil and military flying machines.

the -400 is the longest of the three. The -500 is the shortest. The -300 is in the middle. You can tell if it's a -500 because there are 8 windows (i think) in the front. The -300 has 12. Not sure about the -400. You can spot a -500 in the air easily since it's short. You'll know...

The 737-500 should be recognized by its size. The 737-400 has 2 overwing exits. The 737-300, well not sure how to recognize it.

And basically, the -600 is a -500,
the -700 is similar to -300
the -800 is just slightly longer than -400.
Also, I am not sure, but I think I noticed that the NGs have less oval engines and higher tails. Can anyone confirm this?
