Monarch Airlines Enthusiast Day - Reduced Rates

Thu Feb 16, 2012 10:39 am

Hi All,

I see on their website that Monarch have reduced the seat rate on the planned Enthusiast Day on 2nd March from £149 per seat to £129 per seat.

The event includes the unique opportunity to fly in to Broughton (CEG), home of Airbus UK where passengers will get to tour the factories and take part in a Q&A session with Airbus staff. On return to Manchester in the evening, passengers will be given the chance to visit the Monarch Aircraft Engineering hangar at the site, and nose around the aircraft that are in there for maintenance.

All in all, a fantastic opportunity to visit behind the scenes at a facility that rarely welcomes Enthusiasts, and never welcomes commercial flights.

Full details of the event can be found on the Monarch website;

http://www.monarch.co.uk/offers/flights/enthusiasts-day-trip

To top all that, they are running a competition to win time in their Airbus A320/A321 simulator!

So, who's going?

Personally, i think it was overpriced in the from the start....therefore you immediately had the lack of interest due to the cost.
And for me ... MAN-Broughton -MAN routing is not worth that price, even with a walk around a factory with some cheese sandwiches thrown in for luck.
Even at £129, i think they may still struggle to fill an A320.
But it's not £129 is it...?
add 4% credit card...= + £5.16
add £4.99 each way for seat res....= + £9.98
Total £144.14..
So in reality, only a fiver off the original price.

However, as a sweetner, they thrown in a half hour session in the sim.....
that'll be great fun for the 2 winners.

I reckon, £79 would be a fair price ......

@ 160 seats, they'd still bank over 12 1/2 grand....

Would you say the same if you bought something from any high street retailer who then put it in its sale the following week? Or would you moan at Tesco because the bottle of wine you bought last week for £9.99 is now half price?

I'm not sure why people react like this when it concerns anything to do with flight !

To be fair, flight time is planned for 40 minutes out and 40 minutes back. My educated guess would be that it will be a MAN-WAL-IOM-WAL-HAW and reverse.

Still, everyone has their own interpretation of good value. This is an opportunity for people who wouldn't normally be able to get up close with both Airbus and Monarch facilities, with 1 hour 20 minutes' flying thrown in also.

So I drive a 4x4. So what?! Tax the a$$ off me for it...oh, you already have... :-(

40 mins flight time is a lot...
Are you sure that's not block time, althought i cant see that being for than 5 mins at each end.....

I'm sure someone on hear may have inside info...? 02..?

Within 40 mins, i regularly fly between LHR and MAN....block excluded of course.....That can also take nearly 30-40 at LHR.

All booked passengers are having their £20 refunded...

You forget that there is £25+ per person in UK & Airport Taxes. I think the trip is also for limited numbers, so I think £79 is a very unrealistic figure imho.

It's still overpriced IMO, but at least they have admitted they were way out expecting people to pay £150 for a 20 mile journey.

Of course you would You can go back to a high street retailer and they will usually refund the difference. Even if they don't, you can just return the item anyway and purchase again (you have a period of time to take it back). You can't return a flight.

But would full APD still be due? It is a pleasure flight and pleasure flights are exempt. Although not sure of the legalities when that pleasure flight lands elsewhere....

And a trip to Broughton is not as rare as MON are making out, my local aviation society has been running free (yes free) trips there for donkeys years as well as Warton (although I've never participated).
Next flight: Feb 2012 - BHX-CPH-BHX - SK MD87 / CRJ900

You're not paying for the journey, you're paying for the experience. If you can get the same experience cheaper, go ahead.

Absolutely, should be a cool experience to fly in to Broughton, not many people get the chance to do that... and I have to say, having visited the Monarch hangar at Manchester before, it is a really fantastic opportunity.

Surly the fact that Monarch are even bothering in the first place is worthwhile. How many airlines have any interest in enthusiasts?
from the Island with sun and great photo's.. Why not visit Lanzarote

I can't believe folk are grumbling about the cost here. If it's too expensive then don't go. It really is that simple...

If I lived near MAN I would go for this in a heartbeat. It's not just the flight, it's the tours, the questions, photo opps etc. Having a look at the Airbus plant and various lines, questions, meeting fellow enthusiasts, getting to have a look around the Monarch engineering hangar etc... flying into an airport you'd rarely have the chance to fly to... I mean, not many of us I am sure have flown into Broughton.

Shame they don't have anything similar operating from LTN or STN...

Just remembered, way back in 1991 I paid £49 to go on an hours flight with Britannia from EMA to the East Coast and back... with inflation I think this Monarch trip must be a bargain!
