Future Of JFK Terminal 2 & 6

I see all this talk about the renovations to Terminal 4, I was wondering what they are going to do to Terminal 2? Will they change the entrance or the exterior? Will it still connect to the Air Train?
I was also wondering if the plans for the expanded Terminal 5 have been released now that 6 is gone?

The popuar opinion is that T5 will expand into T6 land.

T6 is gone. T5i will likey occupy some or all of the site.

T2 brings up a good question that I was thinking about

What happens with the T2/T3 station on the AirTrain? The walkway is attached to the Rotunda area which is being razed.

Does the new walkway connecting T2 and T4 connect with the AirTrain Station?

Is the walkway pre or post security?

If it is post security (which I assume) what happens to tha AirTrain station that is only 10 years old? How does it fit in and how does one reach T2 without going outside?

Surely DL isn't spending a billion dollars to have people walk outside to T2 from the T2/T3 station,right?

Since this is coming from me please take with a grain of salt, but IIRC the plan is for the Airtrain bridge to remain in it's current configuration. It will connect with the extended walkway being built between T2 and T4, I've seen no renderings of any kind of structure that would support a passenger screening area. So there's only two possibilities:

The walkway connecting T-2 and T-4 will be landside, not airside. This kind of makes sense since passengers have to be re-screened anyway connecting between International and domestic.

The other possibility, although too complicated and require much more logistical support, would to split the walkway between T-2 and T-4 into dual corridors (one sterile and one non sterile). The logistics of this seems prohibitively complicated though, and thus I think it's the first one I mentioned (entire walkway landside).

They'll probably use this an excuse to eventually take over all of T4 and kick most other airlines out.

If the walkway is landside then all connections, except domestic to domestic in T-2, would have to be re-screened. I guess DL could supplement the land side walkway with an air side shuttle bus.

It is a bit of a temporary project to being with which is why I ask.

Like STT I thought of a dual level connector to allow a short walk to T2.

Honestly, I think the cheapest crappy approach will be used...the connector will connect to the current elevator bank down to the street and you will be left in no mans land

My guess.

1) The entrance/exit at the T3 end of the T2/T3 station will be closed.
2) Passengers going to domestic T2 flights will be directed to the T2 /T3 rear exit which will remain unchanged. (It's not a very long walk across the street. No worse than many other airports around the USA with linked public transit. Think Washington Reagan Metro link)
3) The T4 station will be the primary Delta stop. This station is the best on the line since it's in the terminal.
4) Connector bridge will be behind security. This will allow passengers who don't wish to go outside to clear security @ T4 and use the connector.

T5i is pretty much a done deal. Awaiting final approval from Port Authority

I have seen the layout and official schematics for T5i and I think it will look great.

It will indeed spill over in the the space once occupied by T6. The rest of the available space after T5i is built will be used for hard stands and de-icing area

Safe to say we will never see another T6.

Thank you for the info...

Will they be upgrading the interior or Exterior of Terminal 2?

Speaking of Terminal Two... with 6 gone and 3 soon to be gone when will they be changing the names of the terminals?

Right, 3 new gates but once all is said and done, gates 25 - 27 will be incorporated into "T5i".

Gates 25 - 30 will be "International" with customs etc... 6 Gates Total

The rest of the space will be hard stands and de-ice area

The additional 3 gates (Gates 28-30) will be built straight out from the gate 27 side going under the existing Airtrain Skywalk up to about where the skywalk starts to curve left.

Here is a very rough idea of what T5i will look like. Anything Yellow will is the new addition to T5

I think people have a mis-conception that T-5I will be a distinct terminal entity. In reality, it's just going to be a small extension from the current T-5. Three gates (plus making some of the existing gates FIS-capable) sounds like the best way to go. Should be a quick and relatively cheap project. I do wonder there the FIS facility will exit though. Next time I'm at T5 I'l have to walk around the arrivals level and see if there is natural space for it to go.

6 gates should be enough for jetBlue to handle Carribean and Central American arrivals, and handle some partner airlines if they so desire. It will also leave a ton of space should the Port ever decide to knock down Terminal 7 and build a large terminal in its place and on some of the former T6 space. Someday this is bound to happen, even if it takes 20 years. But in the meantime, plenty of space for jetBlue in their home city.

Building T5 smartly and efficiently was a very wise decision by jetBlue. Juts look at Delta and American's terminal situation at JFK...American has a terminal they can't afford to operate from, and Delta....

At current, this is what I believe DL does for passengers who arrive in T3 and need to catch a connecting flight from T4....they use a mobile lounge that attaches to gate 11 and that carries people over to T4. I don't see why a mobile lounge or shuttle bus couldn't continue to do the same thing from T2 (and from T1 for AF and KE connections)
