Pretty dog-gon cool. Can't wait until it is delivered.

Would anyone know how much overweight this bird is compared to the ones ANA and Japan Airlines received? Have there been any weight improvements yet?

Would really have liked UA to bring at least the first 787 off the line with some kind of special livery, even if it was just a huge 787 on it or some thing that stands out. After all they are going to be the first north american company with the 787 so should make the most of it. That aside, I cannot wait to see it in service.

I should clarify, JL will be receiving theirs very soon and I'm sure final numbers (as far as weight go) are completed on them.

Interesting, I guessing they pulled this plane out of the assembling line just to show case an airplane that goes to a US carrier.

Note that the planes behind it have engines and the one behind that is getting the engines installed.

Wonder what it took to shuffle the sequence like that just for POTUS.

And it won't even be on the background shots. If you see where the podium for the obligatory speech is located, the background will be the giant flag hanging from the ceiling and the other two 787s on the line.

It seems as though the whole purpose of having a United 787 first in the line is to make sure that Obama doesn't tour a plane destined for a foreign carrier...

Actually, that 787 is line number 55 and was in that slot because that was where it was supposed to be. It was put in a slant position for the ceremony, but they did not roll it in there for the ceremony. It was there in the normal production sequence. It just happened to be a plane for a US airline that was in that position when Obama came. The speech was about exports, so it could have been any plane. Boeing afterall is the largest US exporter by far.

Since it's still on the production line, I doubt any of the United markings are really painted on. They likely just slapped decals with the titles and tail logo on the primed aircraft. I haven't seen any 787s on the production line with any more than a white body and painted rudder.

I was thinking the other day about the former test planes za004-6 in rework, wouldn't these first not so hot overweight but probably dirt cheap be good for a TATL shuttle? On shorter flights that weight penalty wouldn't hurt as much and the price they go for wouldn't make anyone cry.

Who are buying these? I would say they are at least a step above today's 767s flying across the Atlantic. They could be packed with high density as well.

9 abreast. With the exception of JAL and ANA, just about every airline has chosen 9 abreast.

They spent quite a bit of money shutting the whole line for a day.

I would suspect that the entire livery is just stickers temporarily applied for the event, I wouldn't think Boeing would just stop painting part way through

I was reading Boeing has patented a 3-2-3 layout so more people have a shot at having an open seat next to them

I remember when CO's new livery came out. It was several months before I realized there was a cheatline, it's so thin. But it grew on me, a very subtle flash in the white shirt and blue blazer and gray slacks.

Strictly speaking, that's not true. Continental chose GE and this plane is from the CO order.

United haven't yet chosen - or, at least, announced - an engine order. Though, I admit, it would seem like a bit of a no-brainer post-merger!

I cling to the hope (a fond one) that they may re-jig things to have GE on -8s and RR on -9s. Well, I can dream, can't I...?

You're absolutely right. Boeing applied decals for the event. This includes the UNITED titles, the globe on the tail (save for maybe the rudder) and the Boeing decal that's applied right before the aft door.

You can see the strange reflection on the tail in this photo, which gives the globe a more sticker-like look. http://bitly.com/w6uu2U
