UAX Off Runway At ROC

Thu Feb 23, 2012 4:43 pm

I was flying into ROC last night and we were instructed by ATC to hold over BUF because an aircraft had skidded off the runway. Turns out it was a Trans States E145 with 45 passengers on board, but thankfully nobody was injured. The airport was closed for a while but eventually opened the shorter runway 10/28.

Has the AC been written off?
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

If you read the article, it said there was no damage and the a/c was towed to the gate.

Isn't this the 3rd or 4th TransStates aircraft to skid off in a year or so?

Another Trans States off the runway? I am thinking they seriously need Thrust Reversers on their ERJ's. I can say that it was very snowy and foggy in ROC last night, and I am not sure if this had anything to do with it.

And since this was ROC, the whole Grooved Runway argument I always hear when these incidents happen in Canada is out too.

If I remember correctly, at the time they landed it was 1/4 visibility, 200 feet vertical visibility with heavy snow. Also at play was the fact that it had rained earlier, so there was a thin layer of ice under heavy wet snow. Not great conditions to be sure. When we landed later on we called braking action fair to good on runway 28, even after plowing it was still a bit slick. Maybe AX needs some focus training in the sim for slick runways, if they don't already. We do it at my airline and I think it helps quite a bit.

Are they disabled or never had them? I know MQ never seams to use reversers on thier 145's,here.

Cheap SOB Hulas didn't buy them when he ordered the 145s.

Eagle has them, but the company has some strict limitations on usage.

In other ROC news the airport has a new director after the previous two resigned in disgrace. The new director is a retired navy pilot.

This is the Regional that everyone hates (more than Colgan?) that also brought the world GoJet?

Why?

You might be thinking Mesa, that's the airline everyone hates. They started the "race to the bottom" among the regionals.

I can think of 2 other regionals who are worse and have questionable pilot training. Atleast they didn't stall it on landing and tear the wing off.

Not entirely true. Many of TSA's E145's have reversers. A handful of airplanes were purchased from a carrier in Europe and they didn't have thrust reverse. I never cared much for flying those particular aircraft in the Northeast during the winter. TSA's training is definitely not the problem, they have a notoriously tough training department. They do have extrememly low morale right now as TSA management tries to whipsaw them with their other two airlines. Like most commuter airlines, they also fly some pretty brutal schedules.

I was quoting you.

I'm really curious as to why the regionals are viewed so poorly.

For example, I know Colgan is disliked and that their safety record is not the best. Their service and general attitude on the flights I've been on is also severely lacking.

I've never heard anything (and am flying them in a few days) but cannot forget the photo that Patrick Smith posted of their dormitory rules from the 1990s.

GoJet is alright, but weren't they created only to get around a labour deal?

Transstates?

Pinnacle?

SkyWest?

Why are they not liked?

Apologies in advance for going off topic here.

As a cost saving measure we don't use ours unless we have to. Basically the manual says we MAY use idle reverse if braking action is good, the runway is wet, or the runway is less than 7,000 feet. We MUST use max reverse if braking action is fair or poor or using them will prevent us from running off the end of the runway. Apparently when we got the planes there were maintenance issues with the reversers so they developed this policy to save money on fuel and maintenance.

Aircraft registrations N801HK-N810HK are E145EP models which are lighter and are more apt to be weight restricted and have no reversers.

AX uses them currently on all US flying and a spare or 2 for the UACO express operation.

The MLW and MRW are significantly less than on the E145LR/ER/XR.

But it is not the first incident with the type for AX. 2x in YOW in the last year. Now ROC.

MX is not the greatest at AX so if there were any MEL's on the aircraft that would have affected the landing it will also be looked at.

Not quite. The 145EP has a higher MTOW and MLW then the 145ER and has usually started out as an ER before modifications.

The EP's are always weight restricted thru AX. Max pax is 45 and have been known to get restricted to 35-39. There is also the MP model which at RP we had 3 of those. No galley, no reversers and yet put on ORD-HPN turns.
