Summer CO/UA EWR-BCN Downgauged To 757

Mon Feb 27, 2012 9:54 pm

Was checking flights and fares to BCN for August 2012 and noticed the fares had increased substantially in the last 2 weeks. Then I found the reason why. CO # 120 has gone from a 764 to a 757. I realize this has previously been a 757 route, but in January they had put the 764 onto the summer schedule to handle increased tourist demand. My question is, does anyone know where this 764 frame went? I checked the timetable to LHR thinking they might put the equipment on for Olympic coverage, but those flights still show only one 777 with the remainder 757's.

It's always been a 757 route, my Wife and I took it in October 2006. Sometimes the substitute a 764 for cruise traffic, but it's always been a 757. They also went 2x daily with the 757 one Summer.

I believe at least 1 764 will be out of service through the summer undergoing reconfiguration to fully-flat J seats, AVOD, power, E+ and new seats throughout. It is an extensive makeover that will keep each ship on the ground for at least 6 weeks.

My family flew a CO 757, EWR-MAD. We found it to be a very comfortable flight and liked the aircraft we flew on.

Thanks CODC10, that's a very plausable explanation.

I'm aware this has always been a 752 route, and was surprised when in January it was announced it was being upgauged to a 764, esp. since this aircraft is getting some serious interior upgrades.

Its time for United to move all the Hawaii 777 to EWR for Europe service. 757 are perfect for HNL flights, no diversions since Hawaii is 1000 miles closer to LAX then BCN is to EWR.

They'll divert on ORD-HNL...

Do you think there's a chance that the 777 might be a bit too much airplane for EWR-BCN, at least full-time?

sounds appropriate to downgrade back to a 752 if they need to re-fit the 764.
an anticipated drop in demand for mediterranean cruise traffic perhaps? & spanair going bust (star alliance, base in BCN) could also be contributing factors as well.

I just don't get it... I've always flown widebody aircraft on transatlantic except this one time that I was on a US 752 PHL-AMS. Never again. I will very happily pay extra just to make sure I'm getting on a widebody for a 9 hour flight.

I think it has something to do with all available widebodies being used for the summer. Which suprises me because would would think they would utilize a 762 on this route but I guess not. The 757 TATL fleet looks pretty busy too with the new IAD-MAN/DUB and a bunch of them being used from EWR domestically as well.

Quoting jfk777 (Reply 5):

That is only 2 777 flights and they are not going anywhere: ORD/SFO-HNL. Technically for the next 1-2 months IAH-HNL will operate a 777 as well.

I took this flight BCN-EWR in Nov 2007, and it was a 757 then. Nice flight, but I too prefer a widebody on transatlantic flights. If it will save me a connection like in this case, I'll take the '57. My friend has lived in BCN for 5 years, and most every time he comes stateside he's been on a CO 757.

Looks like the monthly debate on narrow body and wide body on trans-atlantic flights is about to begin. I am not sure what the big deal is other than sometimes the line for the bathroom can get a little long after the meal service

If you do not want to fly on a 757 over the pond I am sure you have plenty of other options to get to BCN. I just do not understand what the difference is last week I flew SAN-EWR on 737-9 5hrs and the week before that I flew 767-3 IAD-LHR-IAD and the week before that EWR-BHX-EWR 757-2 just seems all the same to me.....AVOD, seat, blanket, food and sleep ?????
