74D Domestic Routes In Japan

Mon Feb 27, 2012 10:23 pm

Any idea how much longer the 74D will be in service? Or how many are in service?

What routes do they currently operate? Does anyone have a breakdown for ANA routes?

I am planning a trip to Japan, will be in Tokyo for 5 days. I would like do a day return trip to fly on a 74D, can anyone suggest suitable itinerary? I will be flying on a ZED ticket, so relatively flexible. I would like to see Kansai airport, so I am thinking, NRT/HND-KIX - but looking at the GDS there is no 74D operating on this sector, does anyone have any suggestions.

Departing Tokyo, day return, at least 1 74D flight, KIX airport, preferably 2 sectors, maybe 3 if needed to get 74D & KIX.

Also, I do not want to venture out into the city at Osaka etc, or transfer airports, since this will just complicate things further.

Hope im not asking for too much and thanks in advance for your help.

Quoting ammunition (Thread starter):

Current schedules still show a few NH 744Ds on several routes from HND, including Fukuoka (FUK), Sapporo (CTS) and Okinawa (OKA). Not sure if there are any others.

HND-FUK: 3 of 18 flights are 744D
HND-CTS: 2 of 19 flights are 744D
HND-OKA: 1 of 10 flights is 744D

No 747s to Osaka - Itami, the main domestic airport for Osaka, banned four engined airliners so it's all 777-300; and Kansai is mostly international, it does have some domestic feed but the high-volume people-movers are at OTI.

Have a great visit to Japan, and if you're looking for another daytrip idea, take the 787 to Hiroshima and visit the museums commemorating the atomic attack on the city, sobering and interesting and unique. 787 is totally fantastic.

ANA has previously said they were planning on operating 744Ds until 2015, but they have sent a few 744Ds already to the scrapper so that timetable maybe sped up.
I think the number is down to either 7 or 8 frames operational but they really only schedule for 4 or 5 aircraft, except during holiday periods.

I was due to book a trip to Japan last year, when the tsunami struck and at the time the power shortages etc meant a lot of the places were closed, and it didn't seem very appropriate time to visit when a country is trying to recover from a major disaster. But I'm hoping to get my plans back together sometime and try again, so I'm very envious to hear of your trip to Tokyo, I'm sure you're enjoy it.

I'd be tempted to try the 787 to HIR too, I think Hiroshima is one of those places everyone should visit, and as Cedarjet says above its a very sobering place but very important place in history, and the future for that matter. A real eye opener.

There is also I believe a memorial centre to JAL123 at or near HND if you are interested. It's dedicated to learning lessons from JL123 and acts as a foundation towards future safety.
