Busy Month For Central Illinois Regional Airport

Wed Feb 29, 2012 4:47 am

After losing AirTran (Southwest) the folks in the airport authority offices have been busy in the last month! Gaining Allegiant Airlines to Orlando (Sanford) 2x weekly I believe, Frontier Airlines announces 4x weekly to DEN, and now the local newspaper reported today there is yet another announcement for additional air service to be made tomorrow. Here's the link...

http://www.pantagraph.com/news/local...e-626f-11e1-be00-0019bb2963f4.html

Anyone have any speculations as to what the additional service would be? Perhaps something to the east coast?

If you do a little search on F9's website it looks like they're getting service to the real Orlando airport.

Ahhh very interesting! How did you find that out? Do you know someone that works for the airport authority and/or F9?

I considered their recent announcements and thought I'd take a look to see if they're still at it. And sure enough, there it was.

Sure enough, looking in June, I'm seeing 3x weekly A319 on BMI-MCO by F9.

Very interesting! I wonder how much that will affect G4's flights into Sanford? On another note, it seems that F9 is starting to do more point-to-point routes rather than in and out of DEN, no? They also just announced service to MCO from an airport in Montana (Billings I think?).

Where did they announce in Montana? I haven't heard or seen anything about that.

Smokey Mountains, yes - TYS-MCO - but not Montana. Also, just today, ABE-MCO and MDT-MCO.

I'm hoping they haven't done yet and they'll pick up a couple more of the airports Airtran is dropping.

I wondered the same. Perhaps G4 will shift those flights to Peoria?

My mistake... MDT (Harrisburg, PA) was the airport I was referring to. Apparently when I saw the letters M-D-T for some reason I thought somewhere in the state of Montana. I always forget MDT is Harrisburg though.

1+1=4? In other words, what's the relationship here?

While I have argued (and I think you agree) that some of the smaller FL cities might have looked different with a WN schedule of daily service to 3 or 4 cities, I think the DEN hub permits F9 to do the "FL model" somewhat better than FL did it, as it gives connections to a real hub that has some leisure demand and cities with reasonably high demand (both business and leisure) on the other side, many of which are unserved or served less than daily from most of these smaller east coast cities (LAX, PHX/AZA, SAN, SFO, etc.).

With Frontier entering the CIRA-central Florida market, Allegiant Air may feel slighted and shift its SFB flights to Peoria. Unless, of course, it believes F9 will eventually fold.

It will definitely be interesting to see how things go for the first year or so with these 2 airlines going head-to-head on the central Illinois area to Orlando route. I know this has been one of AirTran's consistently full/mostly flights, not only out of BMI but I believe their whole system, for quite some time. We'll see what people really want though... G4 will most likely provide lower/slightly lower fares than F9 but F9 will fly much newer and nicer aircraft and fly to an airport that's 15 min from Disney instead of an hour.

Or G4 might announce that it won't begin BMI-SFB flights after all. Start date is still some 10 weeks away. I know the airline has done this in the past for various reasons (fuel prices, etc.). Marion, Illinois comes to mind.

AirTran's Bloomington - Orlando nonstops were full, but there were still a great deal of connecting passengers on their flights to/from Atlanta.

The traffic, in fact, may be there.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

Yea I could see that happening as well. I'm not quite sure how G4 is going to respond to this... hence why I said in my previous post it will be interesting! I'd like to see them go at it for a year and see what happens. Could it be possible for both airlines to run the same route to the two different airports and still make money??? I find that hard to believe but if the pax are there I guess it could be possible, no?

It's certainly possible, but the number of weekly seats to central Florida is going to increase one-third by late May. FL's 4X 717 nonstops total 468 seats weekly. Between G4 and F9, there will be 714 seats weekly (2X weekly 150-seat MD-80s and 3X weekly 138-seat A-319s). Actually, for about a week, there will be 1,182 seats to MCO and SFB combined!

I'm not sure CIRA can sustain this level unless the market expands with fares significantly lower than FL's.
