CGK Extreme Growth Oct11?

Wed Feb 29, 2012 2:41 pm

Hey everyone!

I love following statistics of the worlds airport, thus constantly updating myself through ACI figures published once every month. What I noticed just recently was something odd about the numbers of Jakarta.
I know this airport is one of the absolute fastest growing major airports in the world, mainly thanks to the never ending boom in domestic air travel.

The airport has been handlng around four million passengers a month lately (ranking around 15) and growing at a pace of around 20%
But according to ACI, during October last year CGK handled 6,453,308 passengers, resulting in a growth of 75% (!!!) and placing the airport second in the world, only behind ATL!

So apparently there must be something wrong here? I mean an airport does not jump from four to 6,5 mililon in one month (without anything extraordinary happening), or what do you guys think?

My guess would be the annual Hajj pilgrimage. With Indonesia having the largest Muslim population in the world, there are multiple 747s and A330s running daily from CGK to JED

Indonesia sent about 230,000 pilgrims to the Hajj, with less than half of those leaving from CGK, so that alone cannot explain the above mentioned growth numbers.
