The TWA Boeings 720's!

Tue Oct 10, 2000 2:54 am

Hi! This is a kinda curiosity and at the same time a small mistery related to TWA operation of B. 720's. For those that didn't knew TWA operated from July/August 1961 until September/October 1962 four B. 720-051B's from Northwest Orient, the registrations where N791/792/793/795TW. Interesting to know is that TWA like Pan Am operated all types of Boeing 707/720 except the 200 version, only bought by Braniff. I would like to know if any of the readers know with type of routes TWA operated with the 720 and any interesting features regarding this one year lease.

I believe that TWA used the leased NWA 720's only on US domestic services. If I am not mistaken they operated them primarily between DEN-SFO/LAX/SEA/SAN where they were in direct competition with Western Airlines 720's. The 720's had much better "hot and high" characteristics that the earlier 707-133's that TWA operated which is probably why they used them out of DEN where this often effected loads.

I think there were also some brief operations to and from ORD, PHX and JFK from various points on their system. TWA designated the 720's as "StarStream" 707's so it gets kind of confusing.

Hi EyeSky!

It was really great to have that information from you. I was kind curious with this lease and now I understand why TWA used those 720's. I also think that probably TWA was due to receive new 707's with trubofans so it was also a way to test the potencialitties of the new turbofan 707 for their network no?
Thanks a lot for your feedback!

The Jan 1962 OAG shows the 720B's on east-west routes: LAX-BOS, BOS-LAX, IDL-ORD, ORD-IDL and some more. Two 720B's left ICT eastbound, but none arrived, and one arrived BDL and never left-- can't explain it.
