Update On DL And AA DCA Slots

Sat Mar 03, 2012 4:59 am

Didn't see this update posted but maybe I missed it.

United is going to add DCA-SFO, Delta will add an additional DCA-SLC frequency, and American will add DCA-LAX. Pretty much what people on here predicted. US hasn't announced yet, and 4 other pairs of slots are up for grabs.

No surprise with the Big 3...the question is what will US do. One theory would be an additional PHX, but since DCA is a focus city I don't see that happening. I think it will either be an LAX or an SFO frequency. If its LAX, that puts three carriers on the route though. SFO only has UA, and with US being in Star, they could time a frequency for connections in SFO. What could complicate SFO is if VX lays their paws on a DCA slot and uses it with SFO.

My guess is that B6, WN, AS, and NK will all get one Beyond perimeter slot. WN could try anything from DCA with that slot, I don't want to speculate. Since DEN is beyond perimeter though, that would probably make the most sense. NK would almost surely be an LAS frequency. AS would either add a SEA, or start PDX. Logic with B6 would indicate something like OAK or LGB, but they have been pushing into the bigger airports lately.

One question I have. Could WestJet or Air Canada get one Beyond perimeter frequency for a canadian flight. If so, I could easily see either YVR or YYC being launched as well.

For DL a second SLC frequency was necessary they needed to offer some time options and the current 757 flight fills. For US however they have enough PHX frequency already and they could upsize planes if they wanted more seats. They wont add another PHX its not needed or a good use of a slot unless its a temporary holder. A new destination will really help them to be the DCA airline and to help the FF base. Even SFO would be a good option for them opposite the UA times but im thinking the LAX option and the huge star FF base and connection opportunities is probably the first route they will consider. US really could pick almost any route here and have its rational but i could easily see them picking an already served city and trying to get some other unserved market or two in the next round.

I think US waiting is that they wanted to be sure they knew where everyone else picked first and no surprises. For the other three they had already internally decided and no one elses pick would have effected them so no reason to wait they just want to get them loaded and for sale ASAP.

US literally has their pick of any choice destination in the Western US since they have the hub on the DCA end.

These slots are being allocated to specific destinations, the airline doesn't get a slot and then choose what destination they want to serve. So the choice of airline goes hand-in-hand with the choice of destination.

I can't say I see NK getting one though. Or at least I hope not. I'd much rather see VX.

VX SFO-DCA seems like a given to me (especially if US decides to use its slots on LAX-DCA)...

I think US should think outside the box and launch DCA-AUS or DCA-SAN or maybe even DCA-SMF, especially since it loves monopoly routes from DCA and they would score political points with the delegations from the two largest states.

Ultimately this doesn't matter. The legislation is passed and DCA probably won't get new slot exemptions for quite a while, so US should do what they think will be the most profitable. Likely West Coast flights.

SanDiego to DCA is at the top of my list with what I think when looking at after looking at all of this info. Seattle to DCA and then a airport outside of the box like someone said.
The FAA and Congress need to know that not everyone likes the idea of going threw SFO or LAX in the overall end.
Salt Lake City, Seattle, Phoenix, Portland, SanDiego, etc do and could easily do very well.
My argument is the same just like in the other post with routes need to be looked more outside of the box then the current LAX and SFO always!
