Good Article On Southend Airport

Sun Mar 04, 2012 4:22 pm

There is a good, accurate (for once) article on Southend Airport and its new Terminal which opened last week in the Guardian today, plus a photo of a Channel Airways Viking landing there in 1964!

although 52 mins by train to London sounds a lot, it could be driven in less!

Victoria to Gatwick is 30 minutes with Gartwick Express, and about 35 minutes with the fastest southern train services.

The train duration from SEN to Liverpool St is largely akin to that from STN.

Will be interesting to see how SEN develops airline-wise. I must fly from there.

My question is... London already have LCY, LHR, LGW, LTN and STN - do they really need SEN now?

I fly to London more often that I'd like, and it's always just to connect LCC flights. I wish they merged all LTN/SEN/STN/LGW operations into one airport, so they'd offer better flight connection possibilities.

No LONDON doesnt need Southend but I would say Southend finds it useful. Its not a London Airport and will never become huge or overly busy due to restrictions and the vicinity of STN. It will chug along doing a decent job through the Olympics and probably after fade a little but still be there useful to its locals nonetheless.

IMO yes, they do, because the 5 existing airports you cite only provide 6 runways. SEN adds a 7th runway for London. it will never be a transfer airport but can be useful to pick up some O&D on LCC's.
Would it be more efficient to join everything in 2 large airports rather than 6 smaller ones? Sure, but you can dream on.

Rather embarassing for SEN earlier today. Apparently U2 was going to operate a special flight from LTN to SEN to coincide with SEN's official opening this morning ... but the flight was cancelled owing to high winds at SEN so participants were ferried in a fleet of taxis.

Don't think that was a case, as an easyJet A319 positioned in for the opening.

Can't under stand why you have such a grudge towards SEN?

In other news, a thrice daily SEN-DUB route has been announced today, operated by a based Aer Lingus Regional ATR42 offering U.S. connections.

That's great news, hopefully all goes well in the next year or so and hopefully SEN will get an A320 or even one of the new EI A319's.
