Eastern Flight Attendant Bid Sheet - ORD - 1985

Mon Mar 05, 2012 5:03 pm

Hello All,

Here is a little aviation flashback for you, in the form of an Eastern Airlines Chicago Flight Attendant Bid Sheet from June 1985. By that point, the base was small, but it still is a great little read ... enjoy!

If you guys want to see more, I would be happy to upload the others. The April, May and July bid sheets include the ORD-RSW/SRQ route as well as the addition of ORD-LAX (starting in July).

Bidding is so much easier now! I remember printing out the bid packets.. some 100+ pages sometimes (what a waste!) and then I'd cut them into strips and arrange the lines in the order I liked. Now it's on computer and really fast but I do miss being able to see them all and it was easier to place them in order sitting on my living room floor.

interesting, thansk for posting.

The Chicago-Houston flight left at 12:09am and then left Houston for Chicago at 4:05am. Not exactly business timings, were those the really cheap tickets?

Max Dugan? wow.

again thanks for posting

Did the ORD base close when the "Moonlight Special" left in 1987?

This flight was part of their "Moonlight Special" service using A300's at that time. The flights carried cargo primarily, but passengers could also book the flights at very low fares. The only catch ... no checked baggage (only carry-on) and snacks were available for purchase. In the summer of '85 ORD-LAX and ORD-LGA was added. Then, in 1987 Eastern moved the "Moonlight Special" hub to ORD, but it only lasted a few months because residents were complaining about all the noise in the middle of the night.

I believe so, at least that is what the former EA flight attendant who sold me these on eBay said.

As a former Eastern employee, anything having to do with this once great company is welcome in my eyes. Really brings back fond memories!!!

So are there one or two itineraries that would be considered the "most desirable" or most lucrative, I guess - that a senior FA would bid on and/or get? Any that nobody would want? A bit of spare time in SJU seems like it would be nice but who knows...

Looking at the trip rotations.....seems like a lot of legs with VERY high time trips. Was this normal?

Some of those are approaching 18 hours when factoring in report times and release times. How (and why?) in the world did those FAs put up with those!?

I'm so sorry! With our PBS system at AS bidding is so much easier! I remember the days of the bid packets...it was getting to be like carrying a phone book during bids!

I sent an email to the former owner of these bid sheets about this and she replied that they never really thought much of the hours because it was the norm at the time. She mentioned that this was a time when the FA's were expected to serve a full breakfast on a fully loaded 747 between MSP and ORD (not EA of course, but she had friends who worked for NW) or, in her case, a decent size snack service (or light meal as she put it) between ORD and MCI. It was a time when the airlines were much more service oriented and the FA's didn't think twice about it.

I also noticed that the 757 image shows the original RB211s before they were replaced with the updated version.

Speaking of the 757, does anyone know if the EA planes had television monitors?

It is....I crash padded there when I was force displaced to MEM for 6 months in 2005. Its a Knights Inn now and was run down but $40 a night for crew....can only imagine what it was like in the 1980s lol.

Would be interesting to see sequences from "back in the day" , early jet age , re: Pan Am, TWA and BA when they had round the world flights with amazing number of stops
