AA Pilot Falls Ill Before LAS/DFW Flight

Mon Mar 05, 2012 11:41 pm

Was scheduled to fly AA668 (AstroJet retro paint) on Sunday, March 4 from LAS to DFW. After boarding and being on the plane for approximately 45 minutes, the FA came on the PA to announce the captain had fallen ill and was seeking medical treatment. After a few more minutes, it was announced that there was a "medical emergency" and that the captain had been taken by EMS.

We were taken off the aircraft, and after a two hour delay, the flight departed for DFW with a replacement pilot. As I would have missed my connection, I elected to spend another night in Vegas as opposed to DFW, and I would like to compliment AA ground staff on how they took care of passengers and made the re-booking process as painless as possible, given the circumstances.

Most importantly, I was hoping someone might have an update on the pilot's condition. I hope it wasn't too serious and that he is well.

Though I cannot answer your question with regard to the pilot, I would like to recognize your kindness and compassion.
Despite your itinerary being interrupted, you still were concerned about the well being of the pilot.
Thanks for your post. Hope you find some answers.
Cheers.

I would like to reiterate what 28L28L said and just mention how refreshing your compassion is. I'm also curious to see if anyone has news on the pilot, and hope he is ok.

Likewise. Having been the pilot that caused a delay (food poisoning) I didn't get the same. I deadheaded home on the delayed flight and spent 40 of 55 minutes in the lav. I had no business being up front responsible for safety.

At an airline the size of aa these things happen a couple times per day. I hope the pilot is ok.

Thank you!

I am a crew member, and I have fallen sick last week on a very long trip after four years of not calling sick! What people also don't know that a lot of crew can be healthy, however if one falls sick, it is really not pleasant!

Wouldn't it have been awesome if you had stayed the extra night and won the jackpot on a slot machine?

Ah yes, that would have been nice, but it wasn't meant to be

I also appreciate the kind comments, but it's sad that things like that aren't the norm. I'm glad for both the pilot and the passengers that it happened at the gate and not in the air, particularly if it was something serious and quick medical assistance was needed!
