What's Going On? (Testing A Vertol 107)

Is that smoke or some form of water coming out of that thing? Is it testing ice formation, or is it just making the airflow visible?

I'm no expert, of course, but it seems like a water ingestion test, probably to check for any cases of engine flameout.

Similar tests are done to aeroplane engines, there are many videos on Youtube covering that.

I might, of course, be wrong.

That's my guess, assuming the temperature is below freezing.

It's probably a ground-based version of this type of icing test.
