OAG Changes 3/9/2012: AA/DL/F9/UA

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

CO was deleted as expected. I combined UA/CO for last Summer so we can do a compare YOY. It's possible the 2011 schedule

had some of their schedule sync issues, so it may not work perfectly, but I can't compare to last week as the whole CO

network was "added".

DL: interesting that Columbia MO and Ft Smith AR are getting ATL flights....aren't those MEM spokes only (as in the only hub to get to those cities is through MEM)? If there is going to be another pulldown of MEM there isnt really too much left to pull from. That will be sad to see, Ive connected through MEM many times during the NW heydays, and even again on DL last summer.

I agree. I think they will begin shifting some of these routes over to ATL. MEM-SFO seasonally coming back was a surprise. Remember, DL will be starting lots of new LGA flying in LGA. I doubt they finalized cuts for elsewhere in the system already for that flying since it's still 4 months out. I think in May you might start to see some CVG/MEM cuts.

Disappointing this route is ending. However I'm sure the O&D is pretty small, so that traffic can just connect through SLC now.

AM DEN-MEX APR 0.3>0.6

And here I thought AM was abandoning DEN altogether after April, and here they add a couple of weekly flights. They'll probably be back next fall. AM is such a puzzle.....

Also, with the changes represented here for the 8 domestic hubs since the UA/CO merger, from the info above, as best I can and just quickly counted, I think that also it's a fairly good picture of the changes in number of flights at the hubs.

CLE.......-4
DEN.....-23
EWR .....23
IAD.......-7
IAH........26
LAX......-14
ORD.....-14
SFO......34

Seems as if both IAD and CLE basically stayed the same, but both lost basically a handful of flights. SFO gained the most, followed by both IAD and EWR for some big gains from the merger. LAX and ORD had a bit of reductions..... and it seems that DEN lost the most here. Even so, with UA and CO having about 430 daily combined flights out of DEN before the merger, and now it's reduced some here..... it still leaves DEN with nearly 400 flights per day.

NW had discontinued it (along with MSP-ONT) prior to the merger. So DL actually brought it back for awhile after the merger.

Thanx for another great update. Lots of work this week - two YOY updates in one week. I guess the UA/CO stuff should be easier next week (finally).

Along with the UA reductions at DEN, it seems that F9 has reduced DEN by some 9-10 flights also (omitting the seasonal stuff). Any new airlines coming in here to take up all this slack.....?

Strange that DL brought this route back with it being operated by a 320, then changed it to a 738. For the summer schedule DL had upguaged it to a 757, and now suddenly the flight is dropped. What?

Trying to make a long, thin flight work in a nasty fuel environment, perhaps? IIRC, NW dropped it when fuel was real expensive in 2008 or so.

Considering the overcapacity at DEN, I hope not.

Quoting enilria (Thread starter):
I think they are trialing some of the MEM markets to ATL in prep for the rumored MEM pulldown after Summer.

There certainly is a lot of evidence pointing in that direction.
- Pulling MEM-AMS as "seasonal" after this summer
- 20 additional 50 seat RJs leaving the fleet in 2012
- DC9s staying on longer (remaining mostly in ATL)
- MEM DC9 and A320 pilot bases closing in April 2012
- MEM-specific spokes starting to transiton to a mix of ATL service

If this trend continues, and I expect it will, with the best place to find a job in America! They are paying 10-12 bucks an hour to work at McDonalds, this region should be seeing some mainline aircraft in the future. I could see more to come, hope they can handle the traffic at MOT, I don't know what the facility is like.

I think they are. This is obviously a less costly alternative to nonstop service to ATL. I don't quite understand why they'd tag LWB to ROA instead of CRW.

A tag like this is very rare these days particularly for an RJ. It will certainly be one of the shortest flights in the DL system at only 44 miles! DL is even publishing a fare for ROA-LWB...not that anyone will buy it.

Until the EAS situation gets resolved, DL is also tagging PLN on to APN.

DTW-APN-PLN. The APN-PLN segment is 69 miles on a CRJ.

DL wants to drop APN but they are having trouble finding replacing service.
DL wants to continue DTW-PLN, but now with an EAS subsidy.

They didn't get 23 more flights. EWR is slot controlled and UA can't add that many flights. Many of the "increases" are just artifacts of the problem with large RJ's being operated for CO because of the pilot's contract.

See the example below.

This is correct, although apparently UA did recently pick up a few more slots as VX folks mentioned during their recent conference call with investors. VX recently announced PHL, their first choice was EWR but according to VX management UA was acting predatory and grabbed the available slots VX was eyeing. I'm wondering if these were excess AA slots, and or the slots that support the Frontier, YX/Republic flights to MKE.

MEM-COU was initially started with SF3 service as EAS, but this market quickly grew to become rather successful and no longer needed EAS funding. I think the writing is on the wall with the ATL transitions.

If they really do pull down MEM, I wonder if they would transfer one of the other flights to MSP? While smaller, MSP is closer to COU than ATL and it would make more sense for westbound traffic. I'm just speculating here, I really have no clue about COU traffic.

COU-MEM: 288mi
COU-ATL: 563mi
COU-MSP: 422mi

COU to large western markets via:
LAX (via MEM): 1907mi
LAX (via ATL): 2509mi
LAX (via MSP): 1957mi

SFO (via MEM): 2096mi
SFO (via ATL): 2702mi
SFO (via MSP): 2011mi

LAS (via MEM):1705mi
LAS (via ATL): 2309mi
LAS (via MSP): 1721mi

SEA (via MEM): 2159mi
SEA (via ATL): 2754mi
SEA (via MSP): 1821mi

Even elsewhere, it isn't too illogical:
COU to other major markets:

ORD (via MEM): 780mi
ORD (via ATL): 1169mi
ORD (via MSP): 756mi

JFK (via MEM): 1253mi
JFK (via ATL): 1323mi
JFK (via MSP): 1450mi

DCA (via MEM): 1050mi
DCA (via ATL): 1100mi
DCA (via MSP): 1352mi

Of the routes I listed, MEM was the shortest 4 times, MSP 3 times. ATL was the longest 5 times. I know I didn't include any Florida routes, but for a lot of larger midwest/western destinations, MSP is COU's best option.

It'll come down to where most of the traffic is going. If it's to FL then I'd suspect ATL will win out.

I kind of thought the same thing last night. Would make sense to maybe have an MSP flight or two to capture westbound traffic. Heck travelling via MSP to the NE even wouldnt be too out of the way. I know COU is looking for another airline to start ORD/DFW or DEN service for westbound connections, so maybe DL would throw in a MSP flight for those routings. Guess we will have to see how far MEM goes down.

I knew about FWA-ATL going 4x daily (for about the first time since 9/11, IIRC). Didn't know about the extra SBN-ATL, but that doesn't surprise me as I realized that FWA and SBN have similar market dynamics. Both have the same DL routes, leakage (FWA to IND, SBN to ORD/MDW), G4 service of some sort, and a lot of flights to ORD (though SBN is all UA while FWA has Eagle as well).

Wasn't SBN-ATL mainline on MD-88s just prior to 9/11? I know that DL mainline at FWA ended in 1998 or so (not counting PMNW mainline to DTW that stayed until 2003).

LAX......-14
ORD.....-14
SFO......34

Good work. For the most part, CO gains and UA loses.

Along with the UA reductions at DEN, it seems that F9 has reduced DEN by some 9-10 flights also (omitting the seasonal stuff). Any new airlines coming in here to take up all this slack.....?

Considering the overcapacity at DEN, I hope not.

Just NK. LOL

Interesting they are going to tag this route through ROA. Isn't DL and the Greenbrier resort still in litigation over payment for service from last year.

I wonder if this is an attempt to screw them with the contract issue in court. The contract may just say how many flights they have to fly, but not where. LOL

Even more compelling...

Lot's of reductions on the shorter haul routes from LAX. SEA down to 3 daily? How the mighty have fallen over the past 20 years.

I think they got out of the way of the DL/AA blast zone.

Thank you for compiling the update, it is quite interesting as always!

It is kind of surprising that both SFO and LAS are going down to just 1 flight per day

Not really...

The only thing that surprises me is that it goes down to 1 in the summer, I would think that with connections and O&D they could at least do 2 for the summer season but I guess with fuel really getting up there, they're probably looking to squeeze as much yield out of the routes as they can, but on average I would guess about 1x daily satisfies local demand.

Does anyone know if CVG-SAN is still scheduled, I was still shocked to see that route come back from the dead last year.

I remember the thread about DL putting that late evening ATLSBN, early morning SBNATL flgiht on mainline last year. IIRC, someone said it was the first tme SBN saw mainline service on DL. I could be confusing it with another city though.

Probably confused with another city. I don't think SBN-ATL was mainline last year, but SBN-DTW was upgraded to mainline during Notre Dame football weekends like it normally is.

It did in fact get a nightly MD-88 for several weeks. Then it stopped and came back again in a new upload. An F/A even pointed out the the crew spends a full 24hr layover in wonderful SBN because of the rotation. One if was first introduced, it left Atlanta very late getting into SBN close to mid-night then departing at 5-something the next morning.

My confusion was whether it was SBN or another city that never saw mainline service before then.
What gets measured gets done.

It ends on 9/2/2012. Last year it flew through the end of the year.

It wasn't SBN, it was a different city. I want to say it was AGS?

Here's a list of all of the mainline flights into SBN over the past 2 years:
