OAG Changes 3/16/2012: AA/DL/US

Wed Mar 14, 2012 5:28 pm

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Wow, thanks again man.

Did anyone see AA's growth at RAP coming? Is RAP at all seasonal? Its going from 1x DFW-RAP to 2x DFW and 1x ORD!

Some denied it would happen, but no surprise DL is killing SLC-IAD once they got the second SLC-DCA. Good news for UA which last year launched SLC-IAD.

DOT "created" another slot for SY since it was deemed unfair to pull the slot out from under them.

I don't think that's it. DL was down to 1 daily SLC-IAD long before UA entered the fray. Now that they can fly SLC-DCA 2 daily, there's really no point for them to continue serving IAD. They'll also continue serving SLC-BWI.

Nobody complained about that? I'd think somebody would say the slot was not competitively offered since the original slot proceeding was invalid.

Ahh. Yes, that's it. If there had been a route proceeding they would have been forced to commit to retain it. Yet another reason you don't just give beyond perimeter slots away to all existing legacies.

SY won a competitively bid slot. It wasn't their fault that the slot shouldn't have been put out to bid. For all intents, the DOT gave F9 their slot back and basically acted as if the new slot was the one that was competitively bid.

So far, I haven't seen any complaints filed. I don't think anyone cares about a carrier that has 1 slot at DCA, flies a route that no one else flies (LAN) and poses no threat to anyone.

DL never flew MEMCDG at all. NWA liked to fly AMS-US exclusively outside their main hubs. MEM was an afterthought. The only reason they flew MEMAMS at all was their JV with KL.

Maybe they are picking up some slack for F9 and AA leaving town and WN reducing service. DL also reversed a drop in frequency after F9 decided to pull out, and I believe AS and UA are also adding. Just my

US DCA-CLT JUN 12>10

I guess this, as well as DCA-PHL reductions also qualify to fund the bp route.

It was a competitive response to US announcing service on the route. They should get some high-value banking pax on the SLC-CLT route. SLC has long been known as perhaps the largest "industrial banking" center in the USA, and the big Wall Street banks are bulking up there as well. Goldman Sachs recently announced growth plans to make SLC their 4th largest employee base worldwide, after New York, London and New Jersey.

AA DFW-PNS up to 7x is pretty impressive. I wonder if will ever see a couple flights upgraded to mainline like DSM recently did?

That is really a lot of flights for CAE. Must still be a cash cow for DL. This may be an example of where a train might be warranted instead of all those RJs, unless most pax from CAE really are connecting. Wonder how long CAE-DTW will stick around?

There's a fair amount of mainline on this route, too. CAE has always been a very strong DL market, and I'm certain the vast majority of pax are connecting. AVL (the same distance from ATL as CAE and with nearly the same number of flights, albeit none on mainline) recently put an infographic on their Facebook page showing all of the top destination markets from the airport, and ATL was way, way down the list. (I was actually surprised anyone would fly AVL to ATL.)

Well that's good news for the DL EWR-SLC flight I guess.
