NK DFW-Toluca, MX: Is It Still Happening?

Wed Mar 14, 2012 6:17 pm

There were some rumblings on a.net a month ago that NK was launching a red-eye slash quasi-overnight flight from DFW to Toluca/Mexico City, MX. So far, there doesn't seem to be any updates on the materialization of this route.

NK Adds More To DFW! (by Atrude777 Feb 9 2012 in Civil Aviation)

In fact, the Press Release that this, along with the new DFW-TPA route, seems to have vanished and when clicking on the link, it re-directs to NK's home page...odd

http://marketing.spirit.com/traveldeals/air.php?s=847&mw=1

Anyways, the proposed times were the following:

NK161 DFW-TLC 2350-0224+1
NK162 TLC-DFW 0320-0600

Here are the more credible news sources, anyone have any idea about whether this case has gone cold?

NK reverses gears at the drop of a hat. The real question is whether NK ever applied for DFW-TLC? Did they? If they have not then they probably aren't going to fly it.

They did. From the article:

"In addition, Spirit has filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin service between DFW and Toluca/Mexico City. Schedules and fares will be announced upon receipt of necessary governmental approval."

The DOT granted Spirit's application to fly DFW-TLC on February 17, 2012. As for a start up date nothing is yet published by NK.

Allegedly it was supposed to be launched on May 4th, but you would think that it's getting close to that time. Idk, something sketchy going on here...perhaps it isn't happening after all.

Non-AA airlines seem to play chicken on DFW-Mexico routes.

Volaris, AeroMexico, and Spirit have all applied for and been granted routes here that they dont use.

Its also worth noting that AA seems to be beefing up DFW-Mexico big time. DFW-MEX is going from 4x to 6x daily and DFW-AGU is going to 3x daily.

Impressive. When AA exits BK, it will be interesting to see what inroads other carriers will be able to make at DFW.

Wonder if that is the reason...

Its a distinct possibility. Mexico City and Toluca are not far apart (about 40 miles). Maybe it isnt the exact same market, but its close. Most people going from Toluca to DFW tend to use MEX.

I used to have a friend that worked for Sister Cities International in Fort Worth. Toluca and Fort Worth are sister cities and they used to travel down there all the time and have people come up from Toluca as well. Every time, they used MEX. Never once did they use TLC and connect through Houston or Fort Lauderdale. Not saying that means much or that traffic from DFW to Toluca wouldnt use the new flight if it comes available, but right now they use the AA flights from DFW to MEX for the most part.

AM used to have 2 daily MEX-DFW several years ago. I believe this ended in 2005. I recall flying MEX-DFW-MEX in MD-87s in March-April of 2005 and I found an unbelievably cheap fare of less then 300 USD with one leg in Y and one leg in C.

I think 4 dailies is insufficient in peak travel days and seasons, considering that AA is the only carrier serving this route and that the connecting possibilities at DFW are huge! I recall there was a time when AA had 6 flights to MEX some days of the week... and either AM or MX were still flying MEX-DFW at the same time!

Well, perhaps AA is adding more MEX service from DFW in anticipation... think of it as a dissuasive tactic to tell NK to keep away.

Thanks Mark. Wonder why that is.

Spirit does market TLC as "Mexico City", though.

4x daily is simply not enough on a market like DFW-MEX given the large amount of O&D that exists and the connections. I personally think 6x is the right number. I would prefer that be spead among two carriers, but Ill take what I can get.

I personally think the lack of a Mexican carrier is glaring in a market like DFW.

I couldn't agree more. I had to be in Dallas for a meeting last week and my flight in coach cost around 800 bucks!!! That is preposterous. The outbound leg had a very light load, so I am assuming my fare was one of the cheapest ones. The return leg was 100% full and oversold (yes, a sign that 4x daily is not enough), so I would not be surprised that was full-Y or close enough.

I think MX would be flying MEX-DFW 7 or 14x weekly in cooperation with AA if it was still around. Maybe Interjet will give it a shot soon. I think the exit of AM in 2005 is a very clear sign that this is a fortress route for AA and that they will do anything within their grasp to keep competition away.

Some Mexico - US routes have big seasonality problems with load factors going up and down like roller coasters.
