What Would A Pax Version Of The AN-225 Look Like?

Wed Mar 14, 2012 8:50 pm

How many pax could it possibly take on one fully loaded flight, I saw somewhere that someone said about 1500 people but that does seem a little too many. Plus would it be a double decker etc...

And if this did exist how big would the stands/gates be to accommodate 2 or 3 at the same time for a fleet. It most likely would be massive!

This is just purely a fun speculation by the way not an actual idea or anything!

Hypothetically it would be a triple deck plane I would have thought. IIRC in it's current guise the An-124/225 can accommodate up to 80 people in an upstairs seating area, above the cargo hold.

Wow, that would sure be interesting to fly. Probably the first plane you could get lost on because it would be so big!

Very interesting, I thought it held alot less.

I bet some airline would come up with something extravagant (a la A380 with shops and bars), like a sauna or bowling alley   But seriously, designed back in the days of Warsaw Pact for cargo, I am sure it wouldn't be a comfy ride for most! And also, being only as tall as the A380 or 747, I doubt it would be triple decker unless a very specific market of people under 4ft was to be gone after

Check out an A380 fuselage completely inside an AN-225. Yep, it could be a triple decker.

Actually, I think this is a scale model fuselage, not actual.

It's a AN-124, The picture title say AN-225, but the plane itself says AN-124. Very cool pic, thanks for sharing!

Just to give you some idea of potential capacity, Lockheed once considered a passenger version of the C-5, to have been called the L-500 and they planned on it seating a max of 1000 passengers. The AN-225 is just under 30 feet longer than the C-5, so I would say that the potential seating capacity of a passenger variant of the AN-225 probably would have been in the same range, possibly slightly higher, maybe 1050-1100 passengers.

I believe that is the model that sits on the Emirates roundabout at the entrance to the tunnels at Heathrow T1,2,3. I would love to see a plane big enough to swallow the fuselage of an actual A380|

Imagine the space needed at any airport, to check in that many passengers, hold them with seating until departure, the real long boarding process, the crew needed to service the passengers and keep their area safe. And of course God forbid, if something went wrong, the huge backlash when 1000 people + perish.

It has far more usable height inside the 'cabin'. Plus the deck above what is in reality the cargo hold, I've not been up there but if it's the same height as the cockpit it won't be tight, although some windows could help.

As amazed as I would be to see a pax AN-225 I would be equally amazed to see what evacuation procedures for one would look like.

Does anyone know what types of seating configurations could be used? 3-6-6-6-3!?

3-5-3 would be the maximum I should think. The cabin floor is 6.4m wide at the floor and 6.8m wide at most, in comparison the 747 cabin is 6.1m across. Incidentally the An-124 comes with the option of a second deck when transporting small vehicles etc...

I don't think current safety regulations permit seating that's more than 2 seats from an aisle, which limits seats along the windows to 3-abreast, and a maximum of 5-abreast in the center section.

Now I know the AN-225 is big, BUT, where are these 1000+ passengers going to put their baggage (unless you want MOL to have a fleet of these flying around Europe that is)!

When this beast was designed they intended to carry the Buran on top (just like the 747 SCA). There was also an option for "pods" which I think were propsed for the M4 (Bison I think). Can you imagine over a thousand passengers waiting for the roof pod to be removed when they arrive at a little out of the way Airport with very limited equipment all waiting for their suitcase that they have mortgaged their house for to pay to bring clothes on holiday!!!

If you look at the size comparison shown here, the fuselage's of the Spuce Goose, An-225, 747-8 and the A380 are all of a similar size, especially in width.

(I love this thread)

Well, as crazy as it sounds, it could actually work as a kind of once-in-a-life-flying-experience. Just imagine the ac rounding the world with stops in major cities and then in each one of these just a one-hour (sightseeing) flight. If they charge, let's say, 100 EUR or USD per pax (with beverage, peanuts, leaflet, diplom...) and you multiply 100 x 1.000 = 100.000 EUR-USD per flight, it could work. Just imagine: Monday-Berlin, Tuesday-Amsterdam, Wednesday-München, Thursday-Zürich, Friday-Sat-Sun-Paris... The fact of being the only one, the biggest, the unique, the beast... would attract many people and media attention (for free), I presume. Even the cabin noise or an old-fashion interior wouldn't hurt the bussines case.

Could you imagine the queue at customs and immigration. Or even worse waiting for your bags at the carousel.

No Thanks
