Identify This Plane?

Fri Mar 16, 2012 7:30 am

I recently got a powerpoint that includes the following photo. The description says that it's a China Airlines (CAT?) flight between Taipei and Kaohsiung and the photo was taken in 1972.

Any ideas what this plane would have been? I'm tempted to say a DC-9, but am not really sure.

did China Airlines fly the DC-9s back in the day? I don't quite have a fleet history for them handy on me :3

IMO, it sure looks like a DC-9 or similar

The interior is of a Convair 880, CAT had some examples in their fleet in the mid sixties. and CAT stands for Civil Air Transport the predecessor of China Airlines .

Looks like the inside of a caravelle to me.

Could it be a DC6? Those seats look very narrow to be from the Convair 880.

My first thought was a Caravelle as well, so I'm guessing that is a possibility.

Very Good Choice on the Caravelle. I took several rides in the 60's when UA Had the a/c. and as soon as I saw the picture I knew what it was.
I miss the 60's & 70's when you felt like a guest on the plane not cattle like today

"Example" (singular). CAT only operated one Convair 880. Branded "Mandarin Jet", it had a very elaborate interior.

If it was 1972 it wasn't CAT. I believe they ceased to exist in 1968, and I'm almost certain they never operated the Caravelle.

It's a Caravelle interior

Compare with

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Le-Ca...ub/Sud-SE-210-Caravelle/1173237/M/

The seat shape and the fittings above the window in another pic by the same photographer make it clear.

China Airlines operated the CRV, CAT did not, and went out of business in 1968.

My goodness that aisle is narrow. Were UA and other carrier's Caravelles 2X3?

I can't recall the Caravelle aisle with 2-3 Y class seating as being any narrower than usual for other 5-abreast types such as the DC-9 or BAC 1-11.

UA operated their Caravelles in an all-F class 2-2 configuration.

This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.
