Is Boeing Charleston Still Political Football?

Fri Mar 16, 2012 2:06 pm

I haven't heard any wails of protest lately from union activists regarding Boeing's new 787 plant in South Carolina. Obviously the building is ready or nearly so, but the current administration has been mute over the past few months with respect to its operation. Is this a 'I-Need-To-Get-Re-Elected-So-I-Will-Be-Quiet-For-Now' kind of mute, or does Boeing have the green light?

Didn't the contract agreement between Boeing and the IAM in December end that dispute?

In short, no. Boeing's decision to place 737 MAX production at RNT (on pretty favorable terms) was enough for the IAM to drop the whole NLRB case and if that's what you're referring to, then the whole "political football" thing is more or less over. In any case, this thread is going to non-av or the archives in a hurry...

CHS is already producing 787s and the first delivery is scheduled within a few months.

Yeah I was under the assumption that this was the case. I haven't read about it anywhere recently, so I assume it's back on. With this being the election year, if Boeing's production/hiring (intertwined) gets stalled at CHS I'm sure that Obama is gonna have a boatload of backlash from the GOP (not to get political or anything)
