Why DJ Is EY Partner And Not VS?

Fri Mar 16, 2012 3:41 pm

Just a silly question: why is DJ an Etihad partner but you actually can't buy tickets to where VS flights to?
Aren't they part of the same group?

Um, you refer to Virgin Group? In that case - yes, but just because they codeshare with one airline in the group doesn't mean they have to codeshare with others. Just as an example, they could codeshare with BA, but not with IB, even though BA and IB are in the same group.

No, they are NOT part of th same "group"! There is no Virgin "Group of Airlines" in the sense of a corporate structure, group board of directors or corporate planning & coordination sections. The only thing that is truely common is that each airline has a licenese from the Virgin Group (UK) to use that brand name.
The Virgin Group owns 51% of VS, which gives it day to day control, they own 25% of VAH, which owns DJ/VA, and I beleive, 25% of VX which is not enough for control of either airline.
So don't expect any great level of cooperation between Virgin airlines, there is NO reason to expect it.

Even though they are under the "Virgin" brand, they each operate as individual airlines.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

Further to the above, other than HKG why on earth would DJ want to code share with VS? The only other destination they would pick up is LHR, which pales in comparison with EY's extensive European network.

because VA offers them something that VS cannot. Access to the Australasian region of Australia/New Zealand and the South pacific. EY also have an arrangement with NZ. VS offers nothing EY that they can't deliver themselves...

Why not, a joint RTW fare using VX, VA, DJ, VS would be nothing more than a joint fare like lots of carrier do. I'd also like to see all the Virgin branded carriers start their own alliance, and maybe start Virgin South America or Virgin Africa, Didn't Virgin Nigeria go bust? This would be keeping customer with a worldwide name and brand recognition for the entire journey. The average lay person world not know there was a huge difference between carriers, they'd just see Virgin on the tail and feel they were flying the same carrier.

VS can get VA customers to 1 European city, EY can get them to almost 15... That simple.

Not going to happen! The Virgin branded airlines do not have a sifficient "community of interests" make that practical and no one controlls enough of the various companies to make it stick. For example I see little of joint interest between VA & VX, most if not all of VA's connections needs in USA, are satisfied by DL. And frankly even less common interest between VA & VS.
