What's Next For LAL-Lakeland, Fla.

Well, I was trying to find the video for this, but cant, so here's the brief print story. The vdeo says that airlines have been contacting LAL (note: NOT THE OVER WAY AROUND)
about service.

LAL. Any chance they would start their own flights? Pax service seems to be very viable. LAL is closer to Disney than SFB. Although, I think LAL does not work as well from Tampa/Pinellas County.</body></html>"/>

I don't see any of the network carriers or established LFC's flying to LAL anytime soon as they have all staked their claims at nearby airports. Orlando and Tampa both have their main airports as well as secondary airports at SFB and PIE. However there are quite a few people with winter homes in the area so a market "may" be there. The new People Express may look into it if they get airborne or maybe some Canadian/European charter airlines interested in serving both Tampa Bay and Orlando via a single airport.

Even if Allegiant picks up some of Direct Air's routes ex-LAL, they already have existing bases at PIE and SFB, rendering LAL superfluous. Barring any new startups like PEOPLExpress , perhaps their best bet would be regional service from a legacy carrier.

I think you'll find t's actually pretty much the same distance, but in the real world, SFB is a faster drive since it has the 417 bypass on the East side of Orlando that basically dead ends into Disney. I-4 can be a parking lot and that's the only option for folks coming from the Lakeland/Tampa area.

Maybe I missed somehthing, but I didn't see anything in the link about airlines approaching LAL. Regardless, I can't imagine the likes of Direct Air making any airline reluctant to enter a market on top of them if they really were so inclined.

It costs $7 in tolls to drive from SFB to Disney one way. LAL is still much closer to Disney than SFB. I-4 isn't really a parking lot between LAL and the Disney parks, it is 90% rural. If you get off at the Disney exit where the mouse ear powerline is, you are well before the parking lot area of I-4. I-4 becomes a parking lot usually north of Highway 192 and the Osceola Parkway due to losing that lane at Apopka Vineland Rd. /Lake Buena Vista exit. It usually clears up for a while after the Sea World exit, then there are problems again sometimes around Universal Exit and Florida Turnpike. The other problem area stretches from John Young Parkway to downtown due to the stupid electric speed limit signs that always show 40 mph.

LAL to Disney is a quick drive. My parents were staying near Disney last spring and it took me no time to get to Sun N Fun from their place each day.

That Direct Air / ex-Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-400 sitting on the Lakeland airport ramp with a group of very irate senior citizens travelers left stranded by the bankrupt carrier was ripe for a news event that Lakeland didn't need. Previously they had announced that passenger traffic was increasing rapidly.

Aren't there rumors that Sun Country is being actively recruited? They do fly into nearby Orlando but anything is possible with incentives. I hope Lakeland officials don't have to court a less stable airline because the last thing Lakeland needs is another Fly-By-Night Airline.

I guess with the above in mind, I just don't think it's really a true statement to say LAL is "closer", "much closer", etc. In my opinion, and from 30,000', when we are talking about such small differences, I think the reality is they are pretty much the same with drive time favoring either depending on the day and time.

The last few times we visited Mickey, we actually did fly into SFB and loved how fast we got thru. We stayed around the I-Drive area which I think a lot of people do also because of cost. In this case, the edge definitely goes to SFB as being closer to where a lot of people "stay" which is the primary point involved in the to/from airport drive.

When Direct Air started at LAL they claimed 17,000 tickets sold. Just as soon as summer was over last year things started going down hill. They were to start service from LAL to SJU. It never happened. I don't think they could get anyone to buy tickets. This is sad because there is a large Hispanic population in Kissimmee, just north of Lakeland. A untapped market. I never saw any ads except emails I got because I applied for a job with them and never had a reply.

You can disagree but I live here and travel the State by car and plane weekly. You can leave the general Disney area and be at LAL just as fast as you could ever be at SFB. As the other guy said I-4 is six lanes through rural area from Disney toward LAL and it's only about 35 miles down to the 2nd Polk Parkway exit that leaves you about 3 min. from the airport. Traffic can be thick but always moving 75+ in the fast lane.

The distance may be shorter but traveling to SFB via I--4 to 417 or just via the loop on 417 leaves far more opportunity for delay as both pass through the Orlando metro area. 417 used to be smooth but not as much anymore. Traffic is thick and so are the construction zones. I-4 from Downtown Orlando going north toward Lake Mary/Sanford after 3 p.m?....forget it!

There is no need to argue about 10 minutes of driving time. At the end of the day SFB is a established airport that is an easy airport with all the big airport amenities that passengers want. You have the restaurants, VIP lounges/Duty free (INTL terminal), established ground transportation services, free wifi, shopping. I would rather fly into SFB and be able to chose any rental car company I want (LAL just has hertz and Usave), have quick access to daytona, I-Drive, Downtown, or the parks. You really cant compare the 2 airports!

I'm glad someone remembered National!

Actually, Lakeland was one of NAL's original cities from 1934, on the St Pete, Tampa, Lakeland, Orlando and Daytona Beach route, served with single-engine Ryans. The last flight was Convair 440 service, March 1, 1962. The new four-lane Plant City Highway halved the driving time from Lakeland to TPA; at the end National was boarding less than two passengers a day on two flights, one east bound and the other west bound.

The 737-400 is more than likely owned and operated by Sky King, who are based at LAL. Direct Air never had any airplanes of their own, though other airline's aircraft did have "Direct Air" titles applied.

I live here and travel I-4 every weekend between Orlando and Tampa/Clearwater area. The time between Lakeland and Disney is very fast. I travel 417 many times a year too. If there is an accident on 417, you really have a mess because it pretty much stopped and hard to turn around or exit. The traffic problems rarely happen between Lakeland and the western Disney entrance. The traffic problems are north of Highway 192.

Yes SFB is better for downtown and even I-Drive or Universal, but LAL is closer and quicker to Mickeyland.

A lot of people that go to Mickeyland, if they don't stay in Mickeyland end up staying on Highway 192 - at least those who would fly the cheap budget airlines. Highway 192 has a lot of the cheap motels and timeshares all along it, some on the far west end near the Polk County Border (county where LAL is).

Untapped market how??? Kissimmee is closer to MCO than LAL or SFB and MCO has many Jet Blue and Air Tran daily flights as well as Spirit that fly to SJU and other Puerto Rican cities. Not sure why AA dropped their SJU flights from MCO, but they were flying 3-4 A300s a day back in 2008.
