Unruly Flight Attendant On Air China Flight

Fri Mar 16, 2012 11:51 pm

I laugh after reading the title, I'm very used to see the usual "unruly passenger" title in the aviation sites or the press, but this is not the same

The word "unruly" seems a bit exaggerate too, blocking the aisle with a cart and sending text messages could sound less serious than a fight on board, but certainly it was a very strange and unprofessional situation, the things could end very bad in an emergency scenario.... I guess the stress win the battle in this case and this poor FA simply broke down...?

Sounds like she couldn't wait to get fired, eh?

that's what surprised me, as well. But then again, we all remember that Jet Blue flight at JFK not too long ago~

Sending text messages while in flight I highly doubt it... So how many passengers witnessed the "text message"...?

I'll play devil's advocate. Lets just say one or 2 passengers saw said flight attendant doing something that wasn't 100% kosher. That passenger tells another and another and before you know it becomes viral on you tube, Facebook etc.
Then you get several other passengers maybe a lawyer or 2 and a light bulb goes off in their head, "hey, let's see what kind of boodle we can get from the airline...free upgrades, free meals, maybe even free flights. The airline facing a PR s**t storm aquiesces and gives said passengers everything from soup to nuts and there you have it.
Of course it could be true that the flight attendant did block the asile and text and did other naughty stuff. It will all come out in the wash.

Ha! Not in China. Do you think CA would give a s**t?

Doesn't mention if she was trying to do the two things at the same time! If crew are on breaks though, I could understand them using phones in flight mode but you'd think an FA would know if you couldn't send texts

She was texting her colleagues in the back of the plane.
"Cart broken, stuck in the middle of the aisle, need help!"
"...this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped."

Definitely unprofessional but unruly might not describe the situation best if she was indeed texting. Definitely not something I'll ever imagine seeing on SQ or MI.

But I'm hesitant to comment with a strong conviction here unless someone has a video showing exactly what the FA was doing.

Could she have been completing in flights sales procedures on the sales device, using the duty free cart (or any cart) as a desk? Wouldn't be the first or last time a flight attendant would do so. It also wouldn't be the first or last time passengers have completely mis-understood what is going on around them.

The fact that the article says that she was grounded was suggest otherwise. In my experience the device for sales is pretty similar to a chip and pin machine and doesn't look a phone. If this was the case, I'm sure the airline would have simply stated it was routine, as they have done the opposite it looks she was doing something out of the ordinary.

While what you say may be true, we are talking about passengers here. They frequently mistake coat cupboards for toilets and attempt to open toilet doors by pulling ash trays.

Seriously though. I would have thought that mobile phones would not be useable (no signal) in the period before carts are secured for landing. It would be extremely random for a flight attendant to get a cart out and move it to block the aisle after preparing the cabin and galleys for landing (unless completely duty free / customs paperwork). If she was determined to use her phone during that phase of flight, would she have not done so out of view within the galley or a toilet?
