New Colors For American Airlines

Tue Oct 10, 2000 2:06 pm

Of the airlines in the United States nothing will be more difficult to change then the American Airlines scheme. I have read many threads regarding the scheme should never be changed, although a few beleive a change is due. Once American announced they were refurbishing the interior and orders for new planes, I was thinking the exterior will soon follow. I beleive the day will come eventually. Only when is the question.

So to help you brainstorm about this new scheme, I created a brand new website for enhanced planes. Inside is a new fantasy scheme for American Airlines. I created the scheme based on what people have staited before..."Keep the cheatline"..."I liked the retro look". Don't worry, a new scheme doesn't mean you have to get rid of the bare metal fusulage. That was the most popular request, "No white whale." Enjoy!

http://ryefly.tripod.com

After seeing it answer this. Has the time come for American to head to the paint shop or should they continue service for many more years with what they have?

Hmmmm... I don't quite like the tail. The red/white/blue cheatline is not the most important thing, but some sort of cheatline. You need to keep the double A's and eagle though.

I do like your improved AC livery... the painted belly makes a world of difference.

For the new AA scheme, I think the tail is 80s-looking...I just don't like that font on the new AA scheme.

But the Air Canada one with the dark belly and winglets looks fantastic! Seriosuly...that makes the airplane look SO much better. You should really submit this to Mr. Milton (CEO of Air Canada).

I like it becuase its a change.. I think their scheme is great but its dated.. keep the silver for some reason yours screams Flying Tigers @ me.. dont know why.. I like the painted belly how bout a differnt stylized eagle then the one they use now or better yet bring back the retro egal.. I think everyone loved the retro 757 maybe a red white and blue lgihting bolt with a new AA on the tell or a deltaflotish ameircan flag draped over the tell.. nah thats 2 much what i want to see is some more airtran planes concorde 747 Fokker 100 a320 etc

I've always like the Pan Am colors, but it really has not changed since the '60's and is not the same airline.. What about the tail in the same Pan Am blue painted solid, with the globe insignia reversed in white?

Thanks for your comments. I will take them into consideration if I improve further with this scheme. I tried the zig zag stripe as the retro scheme had but with todays colors and it just didn't look good. As for the tail. I tried about 5 different versions including a modern eagle logo but settled with what you see. I am sure I could have done better although it will begin to grow on you the more you look at it. If I come up with something I just can't resist the change will be made. I am happy with the rest of the plane however.

I love the DC Air paint job with the Washington Monument on the tail. That is awesome!!!

Good job   The AA one looks good in a retro sort of way... for me anyway. I vote for a change. If enough talents were gathered, they can certainly come up with a modern livery that contains all the favorable elements (bare metal, etc).

The SAS 744 is exactly as I'd imagined... that livery looks best on a 744. AC with the belly looks great.

The JetBlue 767 works great... Have you guys seen JetBlue's own interpretation of their livery on stratocruiser and DC-6 (I think?) If not, check out their e-postcards.

Not making requests here, but I've been fantasizing about a modern interpretation of Braniff's ultra scheme. Thought I'd share

they should go for silver paint like Virgin Atlantic, and fly the American flag on the tail, a stylised version ofcourse

I would rather keep the current scheme as it looks fine to me. Silver colour..... Cool!

Furthermore, it has been around for some time I suppose.

I don't know whether someone already pointed it out, but it kinda looks like Eastern Air Lines to me.... what with the cheatline running up the tail.

That said, I think it looks too dated. How about a little something slightly more 'chic'??

Hi! I like the way you did those changes, nice work and it's always nice to imagine how airliners will like in some airlines, so congratulations!
About AA well they are unique, no matter we love it or hate it they will always carry on with the metal theme, that's why I like them!!! Perhaps if you not put so many colours it will look great, in my opinion it looks like a south american livery, but it's not bad at all!
By the way, could you think of doeing kinda of revision to my country airline TAP/Air Portugal?
Thanks a lot!

Dear RyeFly,

Great fantasy schemes....especially the AirTran A340 and Eastern 777. Nice work. I for one hope *never* to see a plane with DC Air on it, although the scheme you propose is pretty good. Reminds me of Frontier...perhaps various DC monuments and buildings on tails?

However, American's existing scheme is timeless. It looks as world-class and up-to-date on a 777 today as it did on a 707 in 1970. The scheme you propose also lacks the eagle; 'letters-only' schemes rarely look good, AirTran's being an exception.

I agree with Continental EWR..The current AA scheme is still crisp, clean, classic and looks good.

However, If it WERE to be changed I think you are on the correct track. Maybe a white tail with red & blue A's? Just a thought.

Well, if you want to go really retro, how about doing the tail using the old AA flag pictured on this 1941 timetable cover with the same blue background?

Of course, this would probably look better on a white fuselage, maybe with a blue stripe above and below the windows and "American" in red. It seems most people want to stick to the bare-metal look, though.

BTW, even though I like Continental's current livery and don't want to see them change it, I did kind of like your fantasy scheme for them. That black, white and gold looked pretty classy, IMO.

Ryefly,

Great work, as always. Although I agree with those that said AA's scheme should be kept as is, its nice to see something different every once and awhile.

Now, a suggestion; How about an A340 in the Qantas livery? It seems this is now pretty much a done deal anyhow.

As far as AA goes, I think I'd streamline the cheatline a bit - have it narrower, running the length of the fuselage, not stopping short of the tail - and change the script for the lettering for a more modern look. But truly, it's one of the best-looking classic liveries out there and could just as well be left as is.

Overall I like the proportioning of the scheme, but I think there is too much blue. Maybe it is because of engines .... I'd like to see more balance with the red and white like there is now. It would also be neat to have a larger AA Eagle (or maybe a more stylized version of it) somewhere.

Nice mock-up.

This is a great website. The SAS 744 looks great, as does the Air Canada modified color scheme. They should adopt it! (and pay you a ton of money!)

But something seems wrong with United's A-330. Are the doors correct ?

Thanks everyone for your interest. If I come up with something better for American I will post it for ya.

AT. wow very good. The United A330 is actually a 767-300 texture maped onto the Airbus. So it has 767 doors.

Regardless of how much folks try to tinker with it, AA's 1968 scheme still looks better than anything I've seen so far.

RyeFly - Your CO 777 looks awesome. I've always wanted to see CAL go back to some variation on the '60s "Golden Jet" scheme. I'd keep the current globe logo on the tail done in gold on a black background. I'd also leave the logo off the engines.

Unfortunately any attempt to remind people too much of Old CAL would probably open up a few old wounds among some of the employees. That's one of the reasons CAL went to blue. They kept just enough gold on the tail to keep the tradition alive.

As far as I'm concerned, they ought to revert to the late 1950s scheme - and it works on modern airliners with non mettalic surfaces.

The B757 in the commemerative scheme looked wonderful.

Dear All,

The American mid-1960s scheme is very attractive--the late '50s red lightning bolt on bare metal, but with the white globe encircled by red, with blue A-eagle-A in the globe. Think you could draw up a 777 in that scheme, RyeFly? :+)

Or how about an A32O or 757in the Mohawk BAC 111 colors--with the indian head and horizontal gold-and-black stripes on the tail? :+)

Hi RyeFly!

Thanks for adding TAP fantasy livery, I like it, at least is more stricking then the present one, the red gives a lot o life to the airplane and the TAP logo is simple but identifies the airline, as you know TAP is ready to receive their new A330-200 next year so you should send you livery to TAP ask if they like or not!
Good work!!!

The Mohawk BAC 1-11s were exquisite. I saw them at Hurn on the production line and outside in the sun.

Probably my favourite scheme of all time but the BAC painters said it was extremely difficult to maintain the consistency of the gold trim.

They should either go back to their funky lightning colours (a 757 was painted like that for some reason and it looked great), or go for a completely different image. some bare metal should stay though because it is almost a trademarkl.

Not too gung-ho on the AA colors though. Looks a bit like a Junior league Baseball team logo.

Nice work. It's always fun to see what the aircrafts would look like if the airlines were operating them. It's kind of what I posted a while ago about what aircraft types the past airlines would operate today if those airlines were still in business. I didn't really like the AA scheme, I think they should keep the current scheme eventhough they had it for more than thirty years.
I've got some other crazy ideas for you that you might want to create:
Alaska 747
American A340
BOAC 747-400
British Airways 777 in the 1980 color scheme
British Caledonian A330
Cargolux MD-11F
Continental A320
Delta A320
Eastern 747-400
Japan Airlines A330
KLM A319
Pan Am 747-400
People Express 777
Piedmont 747
Qantas A340
Sabena 707 in the 2000 color scheme
Sabena 777
Sabena A3XX
Southwest A320
United DC-8 in the current gray scheme
United 777 in the old scheme
Virgin Express 767-200
Western 777

The Air Canada and Continental fantasy schemes look great! Having a dark underbelly adds much more to a white airplane, especially the gold trim on Continental. Hopefully somebody at the airlines sees you site and incorporates these changes into the next liveries (and gives you a ton of money, as someone already said).

The black Continental fuselage just doesn't do it for me, and the AA on the tail for American looks too outdated, as others have mentioned. On the other hand, the new Delta scheme looks great, as does the DC Air with the monument and the low-key Capitol building on the side of the plane. Keep it up!

Am I the only one who thinks that changing the color scheme is a pure waste of money.

It is nothing more than a justification by some one of my position earning $100,000 + to allow the airlines to spend millions more.

Me I would rather see the money spent elsewhere. It was Aer Lingus who spent millions of punts several years ago to change the shade of green on the shamrock. It is nothing more than a "feel good" for the few.

I see silverbirds in giant amounts, and I would not like to see those colors that rye-fly made up, AA is not going to go to another color for the fuselage, the aluminum body+AA with an eagle is a tradition, I think the current is one of the best in the biz, I would like to see a change in the cheatline(make it a little more wavy, add some crimson, and royal blue in it) I think the current one is probably the best in the business right now.

Thank you all once again for your wonderful input. I agree American's scheme is a classic. Thats why it was difficult to re design. Its fun to try though. I am sure the designers who gets the job one day will have a difficult challange. Those of you asking for request, I will be happy to create the planes and have written them down. The list is getting pretty long so please be patient. New to the site is a fantasy scheme for Northwest Airlines. Once again a challenge but fun. Enjoy
