Bahamasair To Replace 737-200s With -500s?

Wed Mar 21, 2012 3:17 am

According to the the skyliner aviation news site, Bahamasair is to replace its 737-200s with 737-500s. I could not click on the story, however can anyone confirm that they are indeed getting the 737-500? I also seem to recall someone mentioning them getting the -500s from AR..

Bahamasair had a few 737-300's for a while. Why did they get rid of those? Couldn't fill them?

Is this the last airline in N. America to be operating the 732? Those thing have got to be running on 30+ years of flying by now.

Did Bahamasair ever operate -300s ? I remember 727-200s years ago along with the 737-200s but don't recall ever seeing 737-300s. Cayman Airways switched to -300s from -200s and even flew a -400 for a short period.

Not quite, up in northern Canada we've still got 4N, 5T, 7F as well as 3H out in Quebec, each with a handful of 732s, although 4N and 5T have some newer 737 Classics that I assume will replace the 732s.

The 735s make sense for Bahamasair, must be some great fuel savings given the current price of oil! And I imagine that maintenance costs on the older aircraft are getting pretty high by now.
Radial engines don't leak oil, they are just marking their territory!

So far they looks like the 2 B735s are still on sked to be delivered in April from AR. I have heard of possibly a 3rd as well but who knows. Hope this is a reality but I do love the 200s so much. I will miss them so. UP did wet lease a B733 from Islandsflug in 2001 TF-SUN for a few months for demand and capacity.

They were, but then bailed out.

The amount of offers they've had on the table is unbelievable. They've so far walked away from all of them.
My friend who flies for them and is involved with the fleet management is constantly annoyed by their apathy to the fleet renewal subject. Oh, the stories I could tell!

They even bailed out on their livery, what you see on their 732s is a half job.

Given Bahamasair's routes, they probably want to minimize plane/km, not seat/km costs. It's not hard to imagine that the economics of the 735's could work for them.

Northern Air Cargo and Conoco (Pt 121) has 732's up here in Alaska. The Conoco 732's go away next year as their last airport with gravel is being paved.

wonder why they did not try to get some of MA's -600's. I am sure they could have gotten a killer deal for them since noboby wants them and are headed to the chopping block.... Thye had quite some life left in them.

I beg to differ. It was definately showing it's age. A great livery once, but it needed revamping.
What they are using now is a half job of a promotional scheme developed for them.

I interviewed Bahamasair's president in Feb 2008, for an article published in the December 2008 issue of Airways.

In our meeting, UP's president said the airline's existing Dash 8s were too big, and UP was considering replacing them with an aircraft in the 30-34 seat range that was better suited to demand.

At that time, he said the airline was also looking into replacing its 737s with NG 737s, Embraer 190s, or Canadair RJ 900s, and using the new aircraft to resume service to the US Northeast.

I agree with the old livery (yellow/blue/white) was a very nice livery and I like this livery too (which is somewhat like their old livery):

Thanks garpd, I like the first one the most. They clearly went for the most simple livery but stripped it even a bit more. I prefer their livery on the Dash-8 as I posted earlier.

Last news I heard from the current government was replacement of the 737's by Q400's in a couple years, this was last year after a Q400 did visit our shores.

I am more interested in seeing what AA does when they return their ATR's, a number of Bahamians in Nassau use AA for frequency even though most times their fares are higher than UP. Question is whether UP is in any position to take advantage of a shortfall.

So according to the Skyliner Aviation news website, UP's new bird (B737-5H6) has the new registration of C6-BFE formerly LV-BAR. CN 26450 and SN 2503. Aircraft was last seen at EZE March 17th, 2012.

I'm guessing its official?

I would imagine they will put the ERJs on the routes and continue the frequency and maybe even add some due to the ERJs being smaller. However it would not be a big surprise if they had a 738 with an morning departure from NAS and night arrival into NAS. That is probably wishful thinking.

So anyone know when the last 732 flights will be? Sad day. What a great aircraft.

I flew on B6-CFW in November, 2010 from FLL-NAS. While it was a treat to fly the 732 one last time, I must admit that the airplane was in bad shape. While not unsafe, the interior was a wreck and the plane was in need of a paint job. Nothing compared to how well DL (and formerly NW) preserved the DC-9-50s that are still flying.
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

Too bad they couldn't get 717s...

I was thinking the same thing! Seating 117 pax and good for jaunts from MIA to Bahama ports of call. Going from 737-200's to 737-500's is kind of anachronistic. They could get hold of some 737-3 and 5's that wer in the SWA Life family.
Bahama's air could even go retro with those cabins with the dual facing seats! And while they are at it they can get their hands on some oldie but goody DC-9's that were NW then DL that date back to the Austin Powers era.

Thanks again for those extra shots Panther

Anyone knows when she will be put into flight? Im guessing start her off in Nassau to make runs back and forth to Miami and Lauderdale until the Vision deal ends.

As far as the FPO flights, will she spend her nights in Nassau and fly to Freeport in the mornings as the first daily to FPO then off to to BWI,RIC,SDF & FLL? Or is FPO her gonna be her home?
