Where Does Avherald.com Get Their Updates?

Thu Mar 22, 2012 1:30 am

I have always wondered how The Aviation Herald website gets their incident data so quickly. The majority of all these incidents are not made public but somehow they have all the information on these incidents within a very short period of time. Do all airports give this info to them to publish? Does anyone have any insight on this website?

They have contact information on their website for people to provide information about incidents. Saying that, when I contacted them about an incident that I had to deal with once, they published more information than I had supplied.

Something along the lines of:
WebCrawlers/Bots are used to search around targetted sights for info, there's a collection of keywords it uses to trigger a lead. The article is then collected and translated, so the owner can just go home from work, open his program, and see what leads there are, and just post it, or send other bots to look for infos such as the charts, etc, and photo rights owner to be used in his site.

This leaves it open to errors, such as for articles on a particular airport, it takes a lot of effort to get the owner to accept that the reference he got was wrong. (mind you, he'd delete criticism saying that the info he got was wrong... and I don't think he likes being criticized in public, and prefer to "deal with the matter in private". I didn't like doing it that way, so I got banned from posting further comments from his site (really))... but that's a personal issue not for further divulsion in a.net

One aviation site I jointly manage, we made our policy to block access for no referrers, as a measure to stem bandwidth costs caused by these crawlers... The only site who protested was.... AvHerald... or the owner of AvHerald (who uses the same username in Indoflyer as in Airliners.net) was obviously not happy, as he expressed and attempted to persuade/dissuade using incorrect assumptions or disinformation/misinformation, at: http://www.indoflyer.net/forum/tm.asp?m=565709&mpage=2 (or if you get a referrer problem, go to: http://t.indoflyer.net/565709)
From the bottom of page 2 onwards... (with the fun arguments on page 3)

I think that can answer "Where does Avherald.com Get Their Updates?"... answer: Bots.

Wherever he takes the data, I think that website is a great and accurate source of information.

It took him 2 accidents/incidents and a lot of persuasion to agree that one airport's ILS was on 25, and not 07 despite providing him with the right charts from 2 different chart vendors, only to be slagged off with, "the AIP says ILS07, and those charts could be depicting company and not publicly available procedure"... (that's despite others also saying it's ILS25 and not 07... and guess what, when he finally realize it, it's as if he never made a mistake, and has now posted the charts for 07! *bangs head on table*).

So, it's a great and accurate source of information provided that he gets the accurate information.

Handful is rather an understatement. He goes all out against one site, and doesn't like being criticized publicly on his site... double standards galore!

But, I still enjoy visiting his site (for a laugh) despite him "forbidding" me from visiting!

Yes the Transport Canada website is updated continuously and usually has anywhere from about 50 to 100 occurrences added every day. Many of the Avherald items involving incidents in Canadian airspace are obviously just slightly reworded versions of the reports in the official website.

A number of other countries have similar publicly-accessible sites.
